Last week, we joined Student National Medical Association Inc at Virginia Commonwealth University for a lunch and learn, led by SSG Michaela Long, followed by a hands-on suture clinic.

The suture clinic, led by SSG Kevin Herzog, made for the best photos. The conversation over lunch is what mattered. Students asked direct questions: how Army residency selection works, what practicing medicine in uniform actually looks like, what the service commitment means, and whether it’s too late to apply once you’re already in medical school.

That last question is key: it’s not too late. The Army’s Medical Corps Health Professions Scholarship Program is awarded in 4-, 3-, 2-, and 1-year durations. A medical student in their second or third year can still have their remaining tuition and required fees covered, receive a monthly stipend, and enter residency without the debt that quietly shapes so many career decisions.

For more than 60 years, SNMA has built pathways for underrepresented students into medicine and supported them once they arrive. Army Medicine thrives off its physicians who reflect the Soldiers and families in which they serve. That alignment is why this partnership with SNMA is more than transactional. It’s transformational and a testament to who will lead Army medicine a decade from now.

U.S. Army 1st Medical Recruiting Battalion
is excited to partner with Virginia Commonwealth University Student National Medical Association Inc (SNMA) for an interactive Lunch & Learn + Suture Clinic on September 18th!

This is more than an information session. We’re creating an opportunity for medical students to connect, learn, and get hands-on while exploring what a career in Army Medicine can offer.

Students will have the opportunity to:

Last month, our Military District of Washington Medical Recruiting Company kicked off their Summer Webinar Series showcasing Army Social Work Programs. It was inspiring to connect with future and current social work professionals, faculty, and educational stakeholders, and to share the range of opportunities Army social work has to offer. A special thank to their rock star panelists Army MAJ Kenny Harris III, PhD, LCSW, BCD , CPT Cam Ashdown, PhD, LCSW, BCD , and MAJ Melissa Marcelli- Flint for lending their time and insight. We are so proud of all they have and will continue to accomplish in their field.

The conversation focused on the career paths available through Army social work, from clinical care and behavioral health roles to leadership and advanced academic opportunities. A key theme that emerged was the unique professional growth, community impact, and sense of purpose found in this line of work.

Three key takeaways were 📝

Persistence Pays Off: Be persistent when applying for Army social work programs—initial obstacles or rejections may just be delays, not final denials, to finding your path.

Diverse Career Opportunities: Military social work offers a wide variety of roles—from hands-on clinical care and behavioral health to teaching, research, and leadership positions—all while serving the broader mission. CPT Ashdown shared a great analogy that I can’t wait for you all to hear.

Invest in Relationships: Building connections with mentors, peers, and supervisors is essential, not only for support but also for personal and professional development throughout your career.
