GMI is a voluntary, multilateral partnership that aims to reduce global methane.

As of March 2024, we have 49 Partner Countries and the European Commission that have joined the Global Methane Initiative. Participation now includes the 10 largest methane emitting countries in the world and all told, Partners are responsible for nearly 70% of total man-made methane emissions.

Türkiye, a member of GMI since 2010, provides support as a member of the Steering Committee and the Biogas, Coal Mines, and Oil & Gas Subcommittees. Their commitment to targeting methane by investing in renewable energy sources, improving sustainable agricultural practices, and promoting the use of biogas from organic waste is admirable! The United States, a founding Partner of GMI, Chair of the Steering Committee, and host of the GMI Secretariat, has pursued a variety of methane mitigation approaches and helped other nations develop robust capacity to address methane issues and opportunities. These efforts include strategic international partnerships, regulatory policy, voluntary outreach programs, project financing, development of numerous assessment tools for feasibility studies and project planning, and collaboration with industry to reduce the negative climate effects of methane emissions and to use technologies to capture methane as a valuable energy source. One of the main obstacles for implementing organic waste management projects is securing financing for capital and operation costs. The GMI Financial Readiness Framework for Organic Waste Management, a new resource developed by the U.S. EPA, addresses this barrier by providing high-level practical guidance to help stakeholders, such as national and subnational government officials, understand the process for financing organic waste management projects that reduce emissions, mitigate potential investment risks, and improve the bankability of projects.

Join us for a webinar on Wednesday, 15 January 2025 at 11:00 AM EST (UTC-5) to learn about this new resource and case studies of municipalities overcoming barriers to financing projects that reduce methane emissions from organic waste.

During the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) Ministerial at , governments and philanthropies announced nearly $500 million in new methane abatement grant funding and shared highlights from mobilized funds including support for GMI. For example, with funding from the United States and other partners, GMI conducted more than 25 technical assessments and hosted more than 100 workshops, trainings, consultations, site visits, and meetings, resulting in nearly 3,500 people trained on quantifying and/or reducing methane emissions in 2024! GMI Partner Country, China, hosted the 20th International Symposium on Coal Bed Methane (CBM)/Coal Mine Methane (CMM) in Beijing, China, that included a visit to a mitigation project in Zhengzhou, Henan Province. The event took place December 4-5 and brought together industry experts and stakeholders, including GMI Coal Subcommittee Co-Chairs, to share experiences and solutions to the issues of CBM/CMM development and utilization and to promote global methane emission reduction in the coal sector. The UN Environment Programme's IMEO recently released a report at titled, “An Eye on Methane — Invisible but not unseen,” that takes stock of progress on methane reduction by examining data collected via the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 and from satellites via the Methane Alert and Response System, from its series of global methane science studies, and from national emissions inventories. The report finds that engagement with the systems built to reduce emissions has not kept pace with the pledges to act. However, the tools for data-driven action on methane are available and represent a clear opportunity for governments and companies. To read the full report, visit: https://loom.ly/guIqnKI

The long-standing collaboration on methane mitigation between China and other countries through the Global Methane Initiative was highlighted during a side event hosted by Energy Foundation China. One practical example of the collaboration is GMI’s International Coal Mine Methane Project List that colleagues from United States and China recently updated to identify existing mitigation projects in coal mining. On 12 November at , GMI Partner Country, the United States, announced finalization of its rule to implement the oil and gas Waste Emissions Charge which will incentivize reduction of harmful and wasteful methane pollution in the oil and gas sector and help ensure valuable natural gas reaches the market instead of polluting the air. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that this rule will result in cumulative emissions reductions of 1.2 million metric tons of methane through 2035, equivalent to taking almost 8 million gas-powered cars off the road for one year. The U.S. also announced new steps to implement their oil and gas Super Emitter Program, requiring companies to take action when notified about large methane emission events. Since 2004, GMI has fostered conversations and knowledge sharing about methane mitigation, raising the visibility of methane as a powerful greenhouse gas and harmful air pollutant. This year, GMI is celebrating 20 years of methane action with 48 Partner Countries, Project Network members, and Strategic Partners from organizations around the world!
