Letter to the editor: Medicare cost-cutting plan could jeopardize patient health 05/27/2026

A Washington Times Letter to the Editor from Madonna Long, founder of Summit Services & Supplies, shares her experience as both a patient and a provider:
“I know this personally, not only as a patient but also as the owner of a medical supply company. Providers do more than provide products. We educate patients, understand their medical history, help prevent complications and maintain ongoing relationships that directly affect outcomes.”

She also raises a concern many in our industry share:
“Under the new system, many smaller, community-based providers may disappear, especially in rural areas such as mine. Patients could lose access to trusted providers and necessary supplies.”

And her call to action is clear:
“CMS still has time to rethink this proposal. If it doesn’t, then Congress should step in to ensure that patients retain access to the products and providers they depend on.”

We’re grateful for voices like Madonna’s speaking up for access, quality, and the essential role of DME suppliers. You can read her full LTE and share it here: https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2026/may/19/letter-editor-medicare-cost-cutting-plan-could-jeopardize-patient/.

One in a Million 05/20/2026

In her powerful op-ed for Real Clear Health, ostomate and advocate Ellyn Mantell shares how finding the right pouching system is a deeply personal, medically essential process that determines whether someone can live independently, work, travel, and participate fully in their community.

As CMS moves to expand the Competitive Bidding Program to include ostomy and urological supplies, Ellyn warns of the real‑world consequences. These products are not interchangeable.

Her message is clear:

“Implementing programs that threaten access to appropriate pouching systems does not save lives or improve them. It risks infection, isolation, loss of employment, and a profound erosion of dignity. It confines people to their bathrooms instead of allowing them to contribute meaningfully to society.”

Last week, our Payer Relations Council met in Washington, DC for an in‑person meeting before the Washington Legislative Conference. They tackled some of the most pressing payer issues facing members, including Tricare, CareSource NIV audits, interoperability‑related prior authorization denials, and persistent TPA challenges.

They also spent time addressing Medicaid Fraud, Waste, and Abuse and identifying ways to partner more effectively to strengthen oversight and improve program integrity. We’re excited for the work ahead as they continue advocating for clearer processes, fairer reimbursement, and better outcomes for the home medical equipment community.
