Shaw Dog Community: We recognize that the park is not opening at the hours expected and, like you, are disappointed when our pups cannot enjoy the great new space. We do not have the code to open the gate yet and cannot unlock the park ourselves, and it is currently being opened by park rangers. We are putting together a list of volunteer openers and encourage you to email [email protected] to be added to our database for future volunteer opportunities or to help open as needed. Please be patient as we work with on park handoff logistics.

Breaking news! We've just received word that the Shaw Dog Park will open to the public at 9 am on Saturday, Oct. 2. The safety inspections are done, the water fountains are functioning, and our dogs are ready!

We will still need to gather volunteers who can help open the park in the mornings and for monthly clean-ups. Please follow for more information!

Shaw Dog Park Community:

We too were dismayed to get to the Shaw Dog Park on August 28 and find it locked. We learned this afternoon that the soft opening only entails a ribbon cutting for the high school and then community members invited to walk around the block to see the amenities, but nothing will be available for use. We apologize for the confusion and will provide additional updates as they’re available.

We are excited to share that this Saturday, alongside the 11:30 a.m. Banneker High School Community Celebration, there will be a soft opening of the Shaw Dog Park, Skate Park and Basketball Court. Thank you for patiently waiting during the construction of the new dog park! Our tails are wagging at the thought of seeing neighborhood friends again. We will share additional details about park news and activities as they become available.

🚨ALERT🚨: As shared at earlier community meetings, the temporary Shaw Dog Park will close this Monday, January 18, as work continues on the new Banneker High School. However, we are excited to announce that the NEW dog park will open in August 2021, alongside a new skate park! We know you will miss having a nearby space to let your dog play but a new, renovated park will be back for you and your dogs later this year. Hey Park friends? Anyone recognize this pupper from the neighborhood? They've been separated from their human. Let us know if you have any leads on a reunification. (July 7 @ 7:30pm)

Per the announcement by Mayor Bowser on May 27, DC dog parks will be reopening on May 29. We’ve missed seeing everyone’s four-legged quarantine buddies, and are excited for when the city can soon unlock the park gate! However, a safe reopening and return to a “new normal” starts with responsible practices from all of us. It is important to continue following safe social distancing and other measures. Guidance from DC Health (https://bit.ly/2XLd6VY) reminds dog park visitors to:

• Stay at home if you are sick or if you were recently exposed to someone with fever or symptoms consistent with COVID-19 or positive for COVID-19.
• Avoid close contact with others who are not members of your household.
• Stay at least 6 feet from other people.
• Wear a cloth face covering when around other people in a public space. A cloth face covering is not a substitute for physical distancing.
• Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and carry hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

Practical dog park tips:

• Monitor crowd size at the dog park before entering. If there are more than 10 people inside the park, please do not enter to avoid crowding.
• Our dogs can be anxious to go into the park. Please don’t crowd the gate and remember to maintain 6 feet while waiting for other guests to enter/exit.
• Wear your mask for the safety of others and to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

As a reminder, we now have a temporary dog park at 11th and Rhode Island, NW, during the Banneker High School Renovation Project (next to the skate park).

Thanks for continuing to be responsible during Phase 1 reopening.
