Thank you Fight For Children for hosting this Youth Sports Town Hall full of critical conversation and and for your tireless dedication to the youth of our community!
We were incredibly inspired by the youth panel and DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb, who highlighted how youth sports serve as a critical gateway to mentorship, safety, and belonging for young people across the District. Hearing directly from the kids reminded everyone exactly why Fight for Children's mission is so vital.

🥊 Happy Birthday to our legendary Founder, Eugene "Thunder" Hughes (April 23, 1937 – March 12, 2018)! 🕊️
Today we celebrate the man who turned a make-shift boxing ring into a "Safe Haven" for D.C. youth. From his days as a Golden Gloves champion to his decades as a mentor, "Thunder" taught us that the real fight happens outside the ring...in the classroom and in our character.
He often said about students, "We let them knock themselves out in the gym... After they get that frustration out of them, we work with their minds".
His "Each One, Teach One" philosophy continues to guide every student who walks through our doors at 5332 Georgia Ave NW. Whether you're here for boxing, tutoring, or tech, you are a part of the champion legacy he built over 50 years.
Thank you, Mr. Gene, for showing us that we are "somebody" and can be anything we want to be. We’re still fighting for the vision you started! 🥊📚✨

Champion in the making 💪🏼 You better believe it ✨️
What does it mean to be a champion? 🥊📚 At Midtown Youth Academy, a champion is more than just a winner in the ring. It’s a student who finds their voice, a leader who mentors their peers, and a young person with the skills to navigate life’s challenges.
From sharpening their jab to mastering the classroom, our scholars are putting in the work. Whether it’s boxing, tutoring, entrepreneurship, or technology workshops, we are building the next generation of D.C. leaders.
