"To my mind, this is the most important shipwreck of the [Byzantine] period," says Justin Leidwanger, associate professor of archaeology and classics at Stanford University, in the cover story of National Geographic's April 2026 issue. Leidwanger is a recipient of a 2026-2027 Dumbarton Oaks Project Grant, used to support the study and excavation of a ship that sank circa 700 at Tatinica (Croatia).

Leidwanger's project will contribute to answering socioeconomic questions about the relationship between seaborne interaction and the political transformations of this period, while also helping to protect unique underwater cultural heritage.
