Andrea Jackson Barefield, Waco City Council District 1

I just had the pleasure of speaking with students from the Vanguard 6th Grade Traveling Classroom as they toured Waco’s historical landmarks—and the honor of hearing a student speak about my mom, Dr. Mae Jackson.

During the Q&A portion, I was asked about a fond memory I had of her in her role as a public servant. My response was that I never knew who was going to be at the kitchen table, and how that gave me the opportunity to see changemakers from all walks of life.

As a young girl, and before a title—my mom was just my mom, doing what seemed natural and normal to her. I didn’t fully realize this then, but that is what representation does: it moves us from young people who may very well be just casual watchers, to participants in creating a more equitable, just, safe, and resilient world.

Here’s to continuing to showing up for the next generation of leaders, changemakers, and public servants in District 1 and across Waco at large.
