April 18 Socialism Conference in Washington, D.C. -- We Need a New System! We need a new system, one that prioritizes people's needs over profits.

WE NEED A NEW SYSTEM!

*Save the Date*
Saturday, April 18

Working people around the world are fighting austerity, imperialism and environmental devastation. In return, lethal drones hunt from the skies, reactionary political forces are armed and funded, and sanctions starve people in addition to the economy. The capitalist crisis that spawned this renewed resistance grinds on with no end in sight

Native Americans protest Chief Wahoo logo at Cleveland Indians home opener 04/12/2015

Native people have withstood 500+ years of genocide, abuse and exploitation, and today face outright insults, cruel mockery and cultural appropriation in fashion, entertainment and sports. Capitalist society will always embrace these classic dive-and-conquer tools when facing the oppressed -- we need a new system!

Because we can't take anymore war ...
Because all people deserve to be equal ...
Because one job ought to be enough to support a family ...
Because our bodies are not commodities ...
Because our health is worth more than a shareholder's bottom line ...
Because nobody deserves to live in a police state ...
Because those who produce the wealth in society deserve to enjoy it ...

We need a new system!

We'll see you all in the morning. Have a great conference!

Just wanted to let everyone know about some featured speakers for tomorrow. We have Mara Verheyden-Hilliard from the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund (justiceonline.org) to talk about women's rights and the fight for Plan B access; Radhika Miller, a nationally recognized expert on student debt; Prof. Zachary Wolfe from GWU on the LGBT rights cases before the Supreme Court and the movement behind them; Eugene Puryear, the PSL's 2008 vice-presidential candidate; Brian Becker, national coordinator of the ANSWER Coalition; and Heather Benno, an immigration and civil rights attorney.

That's a lot of expertise, and it's just scratching the surface. It's a really great program -- we hope everyone can make it!

Strawberry pickers fired for fleeing wildfire 05/17/2013

There are so many reasons why we need a new system. Look at this: Leave work because a wildfire threatens your safety? Get fired.

Strawberry pickers fired for fleeing wildfire Fifteen farm workers at Crisalida Farms, in Oxnard, Calif., left work early because a nearby wildfire had caused ash to fall from the sky and produced dangerous levels of smoke making it hard to see and breathe.

So what's on the agenda for Saturday?

Our opening panel is titled "Rhetoric vs. Reality: The Obama Administration Laid Bare," and features Mara Verheyden-Hilliard from the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund on women's rights and the fight for open access to emergency contraception, the PSL's own Eugene Puryear on austerity and the fightback movements against it, and Brian Becker, national coordinator of the ANSWER Coalition, who will be delivering our keynote.

The second panel, "We Will Not Be Silent: The Exploited Fight Back," has PSL's Heather Benno on immigrant rights and CIR, PSL's Radhika Miller on student debt and student movements, and Prof. Zachary Wolfe on LGBT equality and the current cases before the Supreme Court. We have one more unconfirmed presentation, so we can't talk about it yet, but it promises to be incredible!

We'll wrap up with a discussion on socialism in the United States and plenty of ways to get involved. And don't forget to join us immediately afterwards at the White House for an ANSWER-led demonstration demanding the closure of the prison at Guantanamo Bay!

This is going to be great! Bring your friends and help spread the word -- we need a new system!
