108. VÝROČIE PITTSBURSKEJ DOHODY 📜✍🏻

Dnes si pripomíname podpis Pittsburskej dohody, významného historického medzníka na spoločnej ceste Slovákov a Čechov k slobode a sebaurčeniu 🇸🇰🇨🇿

Dohoda, podpísaná 31. mája 1918 v Pittsburghu, položila základy vzniku spoločného štátu Čechov a Slovákov – Československa, ktoré vzniklo v októbri toho istého roku.

FOLLOWING THE SLOVAK 🇸🇰 FOOTPRINTS IN EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA

As part of the commemorations, we continue to highlight the stories of Slovaks who have left a significant mark on U.S. history 🇺🇸

Among them are Jozef Murgaš and Michal Bosák - two individuals with very different life stories, yet both immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and became influential figures in Slovak-American community life. Both maintained strong ties to their homeland, ultimately becoming signatories of the Pittsburgh Agreement, which laid the foundations for the creation of Czechoslovakia.

Team of our Embassy in Washington, D.C., DCM Matúš Huťka and Cultural Counselor Paula Kolláriková, visited Wilkes-Barre and Scranton — cities closely connected to their lives and legacy.

🔊 In Wilkes-Barre, we visited the Jozef Murgaš Room at King’s College, dedicated to his life and achievements, including the first successful transmission of an audio signal over land between Wilkes-Barre and Scranton in 1905. In Scranton, we had the opportunity to meet the granddaughter of Michal Bosák and visited the site of his former bank, where currency once bore Bosák’s signature during his time as a prominent banker 🏦 We also paid our respects at their gravesites, honoring their lasting legacy.

Special thanks to Michael Stretanski and the Slovak Heritage Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania for their warm hospitality, and for helping us reconnect with this important chapter of Slovak-American history 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼

NCSML HALL OF FAME HONORING 🇸🇰🇨🇿 FIGURES WHO SHAPED HISTORY

The “Big Week” at the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library concluded with the Preciosa Gala evening, held under this year’s theme America 250: Celebrating Czech and Slovak Footprints Across America 🇺🇸

A highlight of the program was the opening of the Hall of Fame, dedicated to honoring personalities from the and diaspora, who have significantly contributed to the visibility of Slovakia and Czechia and left a lasting mark on U.S. history.

We are proud that the first Slovak inductee is Sergeant Michael Strank — the Slovak-born U.S. Marine who was among the flag raisers during the Battle of Iwo Jima. The act and iconic photograph capturing this historic moment became an enduring symbol of sacrifice, brotherhood, and unity, representing the bravery of millions who fought and gave their lives during World War II.

The in memoriam award was accepted by Strank’s niece, Kathleen Kasper, together with her family, who are proudly preserving and sharing his story and legacy for future generations 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼
