MERIDIAN HILL NEWS BULLETIN!
The Armillary Sphere is here!! 🤩🌐
A few days ago, the National Park Service delivered an early holiday gift to MH/MX Park — a new armillary sphere!
(Wait, what even is an armillary sphere? It’s a sort of globe that shows important features of the sky, such as the Zodiac.)
Why did we get one of these? Glad you asked. The original version of this sphere lived in the park from the 1930s until the 1970s, when it was damaged and NPS took it down. After almost 50 years (!) NPS finally commissioned a replica and voilà — now it’s been delivered.
It’s pretty magical. Go check it out this weekend. (And now you’ll understand why there was a bare concrete plinth at the southern end of the park. It’s been waiting decades to be reunited with its sphere!)
📆 NPS staff will be on hand this Sunday (11/17) from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to show off the new armillary sphere and answer your questions about it. Stop by!
👉 ALSO THIS WEEKEND! Our monthly cleanup day in the park will take place on Saturday (11/16). We’ll gather by the Joan of Arc statue at 9:00 a.m., as always — but you don’t have to arrive that early 🥱 We’ll be out there until noon, at least, so drop by whenever you’re available.
Come lend a hand!
