I was pleased to connect with the new CDC Director, Dr. Erica Schwartz, and hear her vision for the agency. As an emergency medicine physician, I look forward to building a partnership that helps ensure our communities have access to health care and the public health protections they count on.

Congratulations to Gregory Kraus Jr. of Amistad High School, a Grand Prize winner of the Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence!

Since 2017, the Prize has awarded more than $12 million to over 200 public high school skilled trades teachers and their schools. Mr. Kraus is one of just 25 teachers nationwide selected for a 2026 prize from more than 550 applicants, following three rounds of independent expert judging.

Mr. Kraus knows the value of this work firsthand. A high school auto shop gave him purpose as a young father and launched a 15-year automotive career. Now he leads an ASE-accredited program where students train with professional diagnostic tools. Mr. Kraus boasts a 100% senior graduation rate, and 16 of 18 students moving on to advanced electrical coursework.

Thank you, Mr. Kraus, for your contributions in building and preparing our students for a strong workforce. Well deserved!

I was honored to speak at Vision y Compromiso’s annual gathering of 1,000+ promotoras and community health workers!

Promotoras and community health workers are trusted neighbors, educators, and advocates who connect families to care. They help build healthier, more equitable communities. Their work expands health care access every day, often where it’s needed most, which is why I introduced a resolution designating October as National Promotoras Month!

Thank you to all promotoras who serve our communities.

For Hispanic Heritage Month, I’m proud to honor Mily Treviño-Sauceda, a community organizer with deep roots in the Coachella Valley and a national leader for farmworker women.

Mily grew up working the fields in Idaho and California with a migrant farmworker family. That experience led her to the United Farm Workers movement and a lifelong commitment to workers' rights. In the Coachella Valley, she helped conduct an early survey of women farmworkers' concerns, which led to the founding of Mujeres Mexicanas in 1988. That work grew into Líderes Campesinas, California's first statewide grassroots organization for women farmworkers, which she co-founded in 1992.

Today, Mily is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, the first national grassroots farmworker women's organization, representing 15 farmworker organizations and advocating for migrant farmworker justice from Congress to local communities.

Thank you, Mily, for your work in advocating for and lifting up the women from the farmworker community!

Recently, I met with local leaders and public safety officials to hear how our communities are recovering from Tropical Storm Rachael. We discussed the storm’s impacts, the local response, and the damage to critical infrastructure. I’m committed to working with local partners and federal agencies to help meet the community’s recovery needs.

Thank you to the first responders, firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMTs, utility crews, road crews, and emergency managers who worked around the clock before, during, and after the storm. You kept our communities safe, and we are grateful.

Please stay safe as recovery continues. Stay away from downed power lines and flooded roads, and check on neighbors who may need help.

This is another dangerous attempt by the Trump administration to undermine our elections. Every Californian deserves to know that their vote is safe, secure, and going to count. We must protect every eligible voter’s right to vote and make sure every voice is heard.

For Hispanic Heritage Month, I'm proud to recognize Mike Luna, Principal of San Jacinto Leadership Academy and a member of the U.S. Army Reserves for more than 23 years.

Mr. Luna is a San Jacinto High graduate who came back home to serve the community that raised him. Since 2013, he has been part of the San Jacinto Unified School District, working as a resident substitute at North Mountain Middle, a teacher at San Jacinto High, and in nearly every role at San Jacinto Leadership Academy: teacher, coach, athletic director, Assistant Principal, and now Principal.

Whether in the classroom, on the field, or in uniform, Mr. Luna leads with a commitment to service that benefits students, families, and our country.

Thank you, Mr. Luna, for your dedication to our students and our nation!

This Hispanic Heritage Month, I am proud to celebrate Olivia Jaime, a 14-year-old type 1 diabetes (T1D) advocate from the Calexico-Mexicali community.

Olivia was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2019 and has turned her experience into a mission to help others. She took part in Children's Congress, and she wrote me a letter asking for my continued support of the Special Diabetes Program, which funds the research behind advances like insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors. During one of her visits to D.C., Olivia also gave me a hand-made scrapbook of her journey with T1D and the work she has done to bring attention to this issue. That work includes starting the Walk for T1D in El Centro, and I'm honored that she has invited me to take part.

Olivia brings a perspective all her own, and she is working toward a future with better treatments and, one day, a cure.

Thank you, Olivia, for showing us what leadership looks like at any age!

As a doctor, I want to make sure everyone in Imperial County is taking today’s air quality alerts seriously.

Strong winds are kicking up dust and creating unhealthy levels of particle pollution through 10 p.m.

If you have children, older adults, or pregnant women in your household, or someone with a heart or lung condition, please try to stay indoors.

If you’re having trouble breathing, seek medical care right away.

Please stay safe and look out for one another.
