On Friday, February 10, the 28th annual Transatlantic Policy Symposium was officially held! This year's theme was "In Transition: Towards a Green, Digital, & Resilient Europe?".

To celebrate the kick-off of TAPS 2023, MAGES students and faculty, and student panelists had the privilege and honor of being hosted by Ambassador Lassen, at the Embassy of Denmark on Thursday, February 9. H.E. Lassen spoke about the need for climate action, questions of resilience and digitalization, and Denmark's role in the transatlantic partnership.

On the day of the conference, we had the privilege and honor of welcoming H.E. Dubravka Šuica, European Commission Vice-President for Democracy and Demography, as the keynote speaker. Ms. Andrea Pozderac, Executive Co-Chair, Transatlantic Policy Symposium; Arrupe Scholar, Georgetown University, was the moderator of the keynote discussion.

For our expert panel, we had the immense pleasure of welcoming Mr. Erik Brattberg, Senior Vice President, Europe Practice, Albright Stonebridge Group; Ms. Olga Khakova, Deputy Director, European Energy Security, Global Energy Center, Atlantic Council; Ambassador Catherine A. Novelli, Former Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment; and Ms. Ria Strasser-Galvis, Manager, International Government Affairs, Google. The panel was moderated by Mr. Drew Fenner, Executive Co-Chair, Transatlantic Policy Symposium; Wallenberg International Fellow, Georgetown University.

We also had a chance to welcome bright and ambitious student from US and European universities, joined in a student panel on Digitalization & Industrial Resilience, and one on Climate Tech & Innovation.

The closing ceremony was marked by an alumni panel discussion.

We are so grateful to announce our keynote speakers for TAPS 2022!

Stavros Lambrinidis is the Ambassador of the European Union to the United States, as of March 1, 2019. Previously, he served as the European Union Special Representative for Human Rights, Foreign Affairs Minister of Greece, and Member of the European Parliament. He received a B.A. degree in Economics and Political Science from Amherst College and a J.D. degree from Yale Law School. You may follow him on Twitter@EUAmbUS.

Ambassador Dereck J. Hogan, a career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service, currently serves as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs. Prior to this he served as the Ambassador to U.S. Embassy Moldova and, before that, as the Deputy Executive Secretary of the U.S. Department of State. Mr. Hogan also previously served as the Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’affaires in U.S. Embassy Baku, Azerbaijan.

With that in mind, we are happy to introduce you to the team that has been working hard on putting the conference together for the past couple of months.

Nick Lokker is a second year MAGES student, concentrating in transatlantic security relations. Alongside his role as TAPS co-chair, he works as a Research Assistant with the Transatlantic Security Program at the Center for a New American Security, and helps to produce the Europe Desk podcast.

Luka Ignac is a McHenry Global Public Service Fellow, a Huffington Fellow, and an M.A. candidate in German and European Studies at Georgetown University. His research at ISD focuses on exploring the dynamics of EU-NATO cooperation. Luka recently worked as a Young Global Professional with the Atlantic Council’s Europe Center.

Andrea Pozderac is a first year MAGES student at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. Her past experience includes leadership roles within the European Youth Parliament’s various sessions, Global-In Fellowship, as well as her interning experience at the Centre for International Relations and Sustainable Development (CIRSD).
