Arkansas was the first state to create a volunteer office. Now it’s making service a pathway to a career.

Engage Arkansas’s 2026-2028 State Service Plan puts service to work on behavioral health, conservation, education, food security and workforce development. The program aligns AmeriCorps positions with in-demand jobs and adds credentials and pre-apprenticeships during service.

That’s the heart of Service United: service that meets real needs, builds careers and brings people together.

“I was working for real.”

Four Maryland service members on what a paid year of service gave them: real jobs with real responsibility, a success coach, free online learning, and a clearer path to a career.

Some came back as second-year leaders. Some moved into permanent roles. All of them said the same thing: it's not a gap year, it's an investment in yourself.

Building a stronger grid starts with the equipment and workforce that powers it. ⚡

This week NGA brought together state leaders, private sector practitioners and national experts in Washington, D.C. to explore how to alleviate energy supply chain constraints, from equipment delays and rising costs to workforce and domestic manufacturing.

Next up: NGA will draft a policy brief with practical guidance for governors, drawn from the conversation.

Thank you to Schneider Electric for hosting.

Colorado is putting service to work protecting communities from wildfire.

In May 2025, Serve Colorado and the Colorado National Guard launched the first-ever Guard AmeriCorps wildland fire crew. Hosted by Rocky Mountain Youth Corps, the crew thinned 15 acres of forest and built more than 200 slash piles, while earning certifications that can stack into other certifications needed for wildland firefighting.

AmeriCorps and Guard benefits are designed to stack too: a living allowance, an education award, training and professional networks.

Contempt has become a currency in politics. Tim Shriver, founding chair of NGA’s Center for Dignity in Politics, talked about DIGNITY.US' Dignity Voter campaign and what each of us can do before Election Day to help fight polarization, find more civility in our political discourse, and promote accountable leadership.

That’s the idea behind the Center for Dignity in Politics, launched by the National Governors Association in partnership with DIGNITY.US. The Center is working to give governors and their staff practical tools, training and resources to lead through disagreement without contempt.

From service as an officer in the U.S. Army to creating a first-in-the-nation service year option for Maryland's high school graduates, we’re grateful for Moore's leadership and wish him a wonderful birthday and continued success in serving the people of Maryland. 🎂

A paid year of service is paying off for young people in Maryland.

Dr. Nathan Dietz of the University of Maryland's Do Good Institute evaluated Maryland's Service Year Option. Compared with a similar group, alumni saw much bigger gains in employment and wages, and more of them were in school and working at the same time.

The gains showed up in year one and held in year two.

How can governors lead through disagreement with dignity? 💬

NGA’s new Center for Dignity in Politics, co-created with Dignity.Us, equips governors and their staff with the tools, training and resources to do just that.

The idea comes to life in Dignity.Us co-founder Tami Pyfer’s new TED Talk. Contempt says “I see myself above you.” Dignity says “I see myself in you.”

That's a wrap on in Annapolis. 🙌

23 states and territories, and a big idea: service is a paid path to careers and to each other. Thank you to Gov. Moore, our speakers, partners and Maryland's service members for showing what's possible.

📅 Service United Fund applications for states open until Oct. 23.
