The wild mustangs of North America trace their origins back to Spanish horses brought over in the 1500s.
Introduced by explorers such as Francisco Vázquez de Coronado and later established in large numbers by Juan de Oñate, these horses adapted to the vast landscapes of the American Southwest. Over time, some escaped or were released, forming free-roaming herds known as “mesteños”—a Spanish term meaning stray or ownerless animals, which eventually evolved into the word “mustang.”
These resilient horses spread across the Great Plains, becoming deeply connected to Native American cultures and transforming life on the frontier. Today, mustangs remain a living symbol of the enduring legacy of Spanish exploration in North America.

It was a privilege to join Secretary Doug Burgum, Secretary Sean Duffy, White House FIFA Task Force Executive Director Andrew Giuliani and Ambassador Marco Peronaci at Columbus Circle for the reopening of the restored Christopher Columbus Fountain.
Christopher Columbus’ historic voyage — carried out under the Spanish Crown and launched from Spain more than five centuries ago — helped shape the encounter between continents that transformed world history. Today, the monument stands as a reminder of the deep historical ties linking Spain and the United States.
As America reflects on 250 years of history, we also celebrate the enduring transatlantic connections forged through exploration, exchange, diplomacy, and friendship. 🇺🇸🇪🇸

On Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to Spain and the United States.
As America commemorates its 250th anniversary, we also remember the shared history that united Spaniards and Americans in the fight for independence and freedom. From General Bernardo de Gálvez and the soldiers who fought alongside the American colonies during the Revolutionary War to all those who have served since, their legacy continues to inspire us.
Today, we pay tribute to their courage, sacrifice, and enduring spirit. 🇺🇸🇪🇸
The Embassy and Consular Section will remain closed today.

The first university in the Americas was founded in 1538, almost a century before Harvard University.
The Universidad Santo Tomás de Aquino, established in Santo Domingo by Dominican friars, was granted university status by the Pope and modeled after Spanish institutions like Alcalá de Henares.
It offered studies in theology, law, and the humanities, becoming the starting point of a vast network of universities that Spain later established across the Americas.
