Our Flagship programs are our residential and non-residential Civic Leadership Conferences. These programs train students in the skills they will need to make tangible, sustainable changes in their communities. After each one of our conferences, students are asked to complete an exit survey, which demonstrated that as a direct result of our program, our students are:

Excited to have a group of young women join us today to learn about careers in public life. The first panel this morning is on "Careers in Public Life." Students are hearing from Kristin Davison (Chief of Staff to Karl Rove), Sabrina Siddiqui (Reporter for The Gaurdian) and Amy English (Congressional Liaison for the British Embassy).

Students this morning are learning about networking for career success from Shana Glickfield, a partner at Beekeeper Group. They also heard from Alex Smith, national chair of the College Republican National Committee. She spoke about how to organize in your community and in school.

Students have broken up into "Senate Members", "House Members," and "Lobbyists." House and Senate members are being lobbied on what to include in the legislation. Next stop, there will be a markup on both sides, then both bills will head to conference committee. Let's see if the President signs it!

Great group of evening speakers. Future Civic Leaders got to hear from Scott Evertz (Former Director of the White House office of Aids Policy under President George W. Bush). Scott walked them through the ins and outs of policy making.
Students then heard from the DC Director of Funny or Die, Brad Jenkins! He talked about how we can use new technology and community voices to make change!

It was on this day in 1789 that George Washington placed his hand on a bible in New York and became the first President of the United States under our Constitution – setting another of many traditions still in use today.
Technically, some may argue, Washington wasn’t the first “president” in the United States.
The first president of the Continental Congress in 1774 was Washington’s close friend and Thomas Jefferson’s cousin, Peyton Randolph. After Randolph, various members of the Continental Congress and the Confederation Congress acted as the presiding officer, or president, of these meetings.
