FTA provides financial & technical assistance to public transit systems, including buses, subways, light rail & commuter rail. We are part of USDOT.

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) was founded as the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) by the Urban Mass Transportation Act signed by President Lyndon Johnson on July 9, 1964. The Federal Transit Administration oversees the federal funding, safety, and research of Public Transportation. This includes streetcars, subways, light rail, bus rapid transit, ferries, and all other fo

Transit safety is a pillar of the Trump Administration, and the FTA Office of Transit Safety and Oversight recently joined forces with State Safety Oversight partners and Rail Transit Agencies at our latest Safety Workshop, sharing updates on risk-based inspection strategies and reinforcing that safety isn’t a checklist, but requires ongoing collaboration.

DART First State, run by the Delaware Transit Corp., announced it received a $14.3 million grant from FTA to fix and rehabilitate 51 buses, 23% of its fleet.

FTA Region 10 Administrator Susan Fletcher joined our transit partners in Seattle for the groundbreaking of the King County Metro Transit's new RapidRide I Line, a 17.3-mile Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor that is a game-changer for the region and is designed to slash travel times and elevate the rider experience. The project was supported by $99 million in federal funding initiated during President Trump’s first term and will move King County forward.

While many of us commute on wheels or rails, for those near our coasts and rivers, these vessels are more than just a scenic ride, they are an economic lifeline.
