Owning an exotic pet is a long-term commitment, but sometimes life circumstances change.

If you find yourself unable to continue caring for an exotic pet, there are safe alternatives to releasing it into the wild. Exotic pet surrender events give owners an opportunity to place their pets in appropriate care while helping protect native wildlife and local ecosystems.

Habitattitude encourages exotic pet owners to seek out surrender opportunities when they’re available. Choosing a safe alternative to release helps protect pets and the environment alike.

There is a myth that banning pet sales helps local animal shelters.

The reality tells a different story. California banned retail cat and dog sales back in 2019. Yet since then, animal shelters across the state have still struggled with overcrowding.

Shelter overcrowding is a problem that deserves practical solutions. Pet sale bans aren’t one of them.

Today is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day, a reminder that even a little extra weight can make a difference in our pets’ health and comfort.

A pound or two may not sound like much, but it adds up quickly for a small pet. Dogs and cats are generally considered overweight at 10–20% above their ideal weight. That’s just 1–2 extra pounds for a cat that should weigh 10 pounds, or 5–10 extra pounds for a dog that should weigh 50 pounds. Those extra pounds can put added strain on their joints and increase the risk of other health problems.

Every pet is different, and a healthy weight isn’t always easy to judge by looks alone. Your veterinarian can help you figure out what’s right for your pet and whether changes to meals, treats, or daily activity would help.

Take a little time today to check in on your pet’s well-being. Small changes can help them stay active, comfortable, and happy.

Bans on pet sales are promoted as a way to stop bad breeders and help place shelter animals, but what happens in practice tells a very different story.

Pet sale bans have fueled the growth of poorly regulated “retail rescues,” where animal rescues buy purebred dogs from breeders or even import dogs from unknown sources in foreign countries. These organizations can then sell? offer the pets at a profit, effectively operating like retail pet stores but with no less regulation, oversight, or guarantee transparency, and with fewer protections for families and pets.

Pet Advocacy Network believes all pets deserve high standards of care and protection regardless of their source. Banning pet sales doesn’t eliminate the demand and doesn’t protect pets or consumers. Instead, it can steer families toward less transparent, less regulated pathways for finding a pet.

There is a myth that banning pet sales stops irresponsible breeders.

This myth is false for two reasons. First, pet stores that sell puppies must source their animals from USDA licensed breeders that are held accountable by both federal and state inspections. Second, the main lobbying group behind pet sale bans has admitted that despite passing these laws all over the country, there has been no decrease in the number of bad breeders. the passage of pet sales bans.

Pet Advocacy Network supports licensed, professional breeders that put animal welfare first. The best way to protect pets and consumers is through regulation and transparency, not broad pet sale bans.

Happy National Poodle Day!

Known for their intelligence, distinctive looks, and lively personalities, poodles have become beloved companions for families around the world. From Toy and Miniature Poodles to Standards, these dogs come in different sizes but share many of the qualities that make the breed so special.

Did you know that poodles originated in Germany and were bred as waterfowl hunting dogs? The traditional saddle cut often associated with their appearance served several purposes: A shaved lower body and hindquarters helped lessen water weight and drag when swimming, a fluffy chest kept them warm, and a shaven face improved sight and allowed for faster game retrieval. Form follows function!

Today is a great opportunity to celebrate the poodles in our lives and the special bond they share with their families.

Give your poodle a little extra attention today and celebrate everything that makes these remarkable dogs such wonderful companions!

Did you know this week is National Walk Your Dog Week?

Regular walks are an important part of responsible dog ownership, providing dogs with exercise, mental stimulation, and opportunities to explore their surroundings. They can also be a great way for owners and their pets to spend quality time together.

Every dog has different exercise needs depending on factors like age, breed, health, and energy level. Finding a walking routine that works for your dog can help support their overall health and well-being.

This week, grab the leash, head outside, and enjoy some extra time exploring with your canine companion!
