May 19 is Hepatitis Testing Day, serving as an important reminder that knowing your status saves lives. Adults aged 18 and over are recommended to get screened at least once for hepatitis B and C. Most people with chronic hepatitis B virus or hepatitis C virus do not have symptoms until the later stages of the infection.
Hepatitis can be more common in Veterans, but can be prevented, treated or cured depending on the type. Treatment for hepatitis B is available and can prevent the development of liver disease and liver cancer. Safe and effective oral treatments are available for Hepatitis C and may cure the virus within one 8 to 12 week course.
Talk to your provider. Know your status. Visit www.hepatitis.va.gov for more information.
