🌐 Digital trade is opening new opportunities for businesses across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Exports of digitally delivered services reached $87.7 billion in 2024, nearly five times their 2005 level. But there is still significant room for growth, especially within the region itself.

In 2023, only 8.4% of the region’s digitally deliverable services exports were traded within Latin America and the Caribbean.

How can stronger regional integration help more firms access new markets and turn this momentum into greater productivity and growth?

Are the Caribbean's skills systems ready for what's next?

Digitalization, AI, demographic shifts and economic volatility are reshaping what employers in the region need, while skills shortages, limited adult learning and skilled emigration hold economies back.
The IDB and the OECD are developing the Skills Strategy for the Caribbean, focusing on The Bahamas, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. Join policymakers, experts and international partners for the public virtual kick-off, with leaders from both institutions, a panel discussion and a live Q&A.

Burden – or bounty? Every year, millions of tons of sargassum, a free-floating brown seaweed, inundates Caribbean coasts. It disrupts tourism, smothers coral reefs, and hits economies that depend on the sea. But a sargassum industry is also possible, with potential uses in fertilizer, energy, food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics ...

🌎 What opportunities could stronger economic ties between Latin America and the Caribbean and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries unlock? In 2024, bilateral trade in goods reached $29.6 billion, but significant potential remains to deepen trade, investment, and development cooperation between both regions.

Our new joint publication by the IDB and the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) explores opportunities to:

• Strengthen trade and investment.
• Improve transport and logistics connectivity.
• Reduce regulatory and information barriers.
• Scale development finance and cooperation.
• Advance collaboration in areas such as food security, energy, infrastructure, and resilience.

Multilateral development banks have made important progress. Now we must translate that momentum into greater impact.

In Manila, we discussed how to mobilize more private capital, strengthen collaboration across the MDB system, and advance shared priorities, including jobs, nature, climate, water, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence.

By working together, we can deliver stronger results for the countries we serve.

Over the past five decades, the economic relationship between Japan and Latin America and the Caribbean has expanded beyond trade in goods to encompass services, investment, multinational production, value chain linkages, and development cooperation, reflecting increasingly complementary economic structures.

In a new report, we examine how the Japan–LAC economic relationship has evolved, the drivers behind these complementarities, and the trade costs, including information frictions, border procedures, and transport costs, that continue to constrain its full potential.

🏠🎨 What if housing isn't a finished product, but a process?

If you're in Washington, come by and explore "Habitar en Proceso (Dwelling in Process)," an exhibition from the IDB Group's Regional Housing Forum that unites the work of Peruvian artist Lucía Coz and leading architects from across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Through art, drawings, plans, and photography, it invites visitors to reflect on how homes evolve over time and how housing shapes memory, community, and opportunity. ✨
