"Running for office should invite scrutiny of a candidate’s fitness to govern—not a trial over whether they belong in America."

Muslim politicians like Ilhan Omar, Abdul El-Sayed, and Zohran Mamdani have faced attacks that frame their religion and identity as threats to American democracy.

While Republicans have weaponized Islamophobia on the campaign trail, Democrats have often failed to confront it — and sometimes reinforced it under the guise of concerns about “electability.”

But research shows Muslim candidates face significant electoral disadvantages simply because of their religion. So why aren't Democrats talking about it?

Ilhan Omar is exactly the opposite of the racist stereotypes Donald Trump traffics in — and that’s what makes her a target, Amanda Marcotte argues.

Homeland Security officials raided the Minnesota congresswoman’s home Monday as part of an effort to prove a years-old conspiracy theory that she and her family falsified documents to obtain her U.S. citizenship when she was 17. Immigration officials pursued the same allegations during Trump’s first term but found “insufficient evidence of wrongdoing” and “eventually abandoned” the search, The Washington Post reported.

“Unlike Trump, who grew up a spoiled rich kid in Queens, Omar has overcome steep odds to be where she is,” Marcotte writes. Omar fled war-torn Somalia at eight years old and spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya. “Whatever one’s views of her politics, there can be no denying that everything Omar has attained, from her education to her career, has been earned against high odds.”

Trump’s attack on Omar is reminiscent of the birther lie he promoted about Barack Obama in 2011 while hosting “The Apprentice.” As Marcotte writes, Obama revealed the insecurities of future MAGA followers by “disproving their hopes that whiteness confers an excellence that they, on their own merits, could never produce.”

“For MAGA, the fear of immigration is not about feeling contaminated, but being shown up and exposed as mediocrities in comparison to industrious newcomers.”
