Briya’s mission is to strengthen families through culturally responsive two-generation education.

Families enroll in Briya’s two-generation program together: immigrant parents study English (from basic to advance levels), digital literacy, and parenting while their children receive a high-quality early education. Briya also offers a high school diploma and training for Medical Assistant and Child Development Associate credentials. At Briya, families build on their strengths and gain tools and support for improved educational, economic, and social opportunities.

Last week, students participated in student council meetings, and we hosted a student business showcase where student entrepreneurs had the opportunity to promote their businesses!

Student representatives from classes across all four of our sites came together to share ideas, provide feedback, and help make Briya a better place by ensuring their classmates’ voices were heard.

Last month, our families decorated a lantern and a butterfly, representing transformation, as they set intentions for the school year. Parents created a folded, painted butterfly, with one wing symbolizing the transformation of their child and the other symbolizing their own transformation. They also created a cylindrical lantern of hope.

Happy Vijayadashami! This Hindu festival celebrates the victory of good over evil and is observed differently across regions, from decorating homes with beautiful patterns made of colored powders (rangoli) and traditional clay lamps (diyas) to preparing sweets such as sewaiyan.

Today we are closing Hispanic Heritage Month by sharing our "Briya staff dicionary." This collection features words, sayings, and cultural expressions with Hispanic and Latin American origins, submitted by our staff.

Thank you to everyone who contributed and helped us celebrate, this month and every month, the rich cultures, languages, and traditions that make our Briya community so special!

Today is the start of Navratri, a nine-day Hindu festival in honor of goddess Durga. It is celebrated differently across India, with many individuals fasting and engaging in reflection while others dance and feast.

Our evening workforce classes had a chance to participate in a community-building student social activity called “Human Bingo.” It was a fun, easy, and interactive way for students to meet peers from other classes. Students had to find people with various characteristics and write down their names and class names on their bingo cards.

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we asked our students about their favorite traditional desserts. Take a look at Briya’s student cookbook, filled with delicious desserts from different Latin American countries!

One of our Child Development Associate (CDA) classes is exploring a families module, learning how to build meaningful partnerships with families to support children’s learning and development.

Students read "A Handful of Buttons," a picture book about family diversity. They also practiced reading children’s books aloud, explored different family structures, and reflected on how they can bring similar family-centered activities into their future classrooms.

During Office of the State Superintendent of Education 's Multilingual Learner Institute, Briya was honored to present about our work with multilingual students and our strong outcomes as part of a panel titled, “Stories Behind the Data: Supporting the Whole Child." Two of our staff members shared successful, meaningful approaches to help other DC educators better understand the practices behind Briya’s strong pre-K social-emotional support data, MTSS data, and parent-teacher conference participation rates.

Last week, COABE leaders visited our Fort Totten campus as part of AEFL Week! Thank you for taking the time to learn about our students, programs, and community. We are grateful for COABE's longstanding support of Briya and our 2-generation model.
