Joined by Senator Boozman, Congressman Westerman attended a round table event hosted by Southern Arkansas University Tech that was focused on workforce development to support Arkansas’ booming defense industry. This week, Congressman Westerman hosted the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Malvern for a stop on their Free Enterprise Express Opportunity Tour.

This six-week road trip across the country allows the Chamber to showcase the importance of free enterprise that drives freedom, opportunity, innovation, and growth for American communities.

While in Malvern, Congressman Westerman highlighted Arkansas' forestry industry, discussing the important role it plays in our rural communities and our state's economy. The Congressman was also honored to receive the Advocate for American Business Award for his unwavering support of legislation that strengthens America's free enterprise system, which ultimately supports economic opportunity for Arkansas businesses and workers.

What happened in Fort Hood on November 5, 2009, was horrific. Thirteen innocent lives were lost in an act of jihadist extremism by Nidal Hasan, a man seeking to become a martyr. His actions certainly demand the fullest weight of the justice system to be brought upon him, and I support him getting the death sentence he was given.

However, a public ex*****on is not in the best interest of the United States or our justice system, which, for 250 years, has been marked by dignity and great respect around the world. Hasan’s goal was to become a martyr. The last thing we should be doing is offering him the public platform to become one and handing propaganda to the very authoritarian regimes we oppose.

I strongly urge President Trump to call an end to this decision that would undermine our system of justice and bolster Islamic extremism. We must always remember the principles our nation was built upon. Turning death, no matter how warranted, into public spectacle is not the answer.

Our trees can solve just about any problem we have. They’re the lungs of the earth, purifying the air we breathe; They’re the kidneys of the earth, producing cleaner water for us to drink; They can prevent soil erosion, cool us off in warmer weather, and provide safe habitats for wildlife. And in Arkansas, our forests contribute massively to our state’s GDP. Arkansans rely on resilient, healthy forests. That’s why Congressman Westerman was grateful for the opportunity to attend the Arkansas Forestry Association Annual Meeting this week.

Surrounded by foresters and industry stakeholders, Congressman Westerman was able to discuss the importance of a thriving forest products industry and how Congress can work to ensure an industry that contributes so largely to our state’s economy can be set up for success through more trade opportunities, regulatory adjustments, and broader markets for lower-grade residual wood.

With greater understanding of dyslexia, we now know that it is unrelated to intelligence; it simply means students process information differently. Today, Congressman Westerman introduced a resolution recognizing October as National Dyslexia Awareness Month, underscoring the need for science-based approaches to understanding this learning disability while equipping our educators with the tools and resources they need so more students feel empowered in the classroom instead of hindered by a learning disability that affects 1 in 5 Americans.

Great having the St. Francis Levee District of Arkansas stop by earlier this week to discuss some of the great wins Congressman Westerman was proud to support in the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) that recently passed out of the House. The work they do and the legislation included in the recent WRDA package are instrumental to the well-being of Arkansas’ abundant waterways and water infrastructure.
