This year marks the 140th anniversary of the inauguration of the Statue of Liberty, a lasting symbol of the friendship between France and the United States.

To mark this milestone, join Villa Albertine and American University on Wednesday, October 28, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Katzen Arts Center for a special screening of "Raising Lady Liberty." The film explores the ambition, vision, and Franco-American collaboration behind the creation of one of the world’s most iconic monuments.

The screening will be followed by a discussion featuring historians and media professionals Edward Berenson, Stephen Segaller, and Stéphane Millière, moderated by Professor Ernesto Castañeda.

Part of the America250 celebrations, this event offers an opportunity to reflect on the shared history and enduring partnership between France and the United States.

The Yorktown French Memorial is a moving site.

Standing 6 feet tall and 17 feet wide, this impressive granite monument honors approximately 600 French soldiers and sailors who lost their lives during the 1781 Yorktown campaign and the decisive Battle of the Capes.

The story behind its construction is incredibly moving:

During the 1981 bicentennial, an unmarked common grave of French soldiers was identified at this site.

In October 1989, the memorial was officially dedicated thanks to an initiative led by French Ambassador M. Emmanuel de Margerie and the Committee for the Yorktown French Memorial, chaired by Professor André Maman.

Inscribed on both sides of the monument are the individual names of the fallen French soldiers and mariners who died during the 1781 siege and the historic naval victory that cut off British supplies and secured American freedom.

We honor their memory today.
