Today, on Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, the Department honors the families whose loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our Nation.

The term “Gold Star family” comes from the Service Flag that was first flown by families during WWI. The flag included a blue star for every family member serving and a gold star if a family member was lost in war.

Since 1936, the last Sunday in September has been set aside to recognize the courage and resilience of Gold Star mothers and families. Their strength inspires us all.

The Department is committed to supporting surviving family members—mothers, fathers, spouses, siblings, and children—who bear this profound loss. We thank you, honor you, and stand with you. Your loved ones will never be forgotten.
