This week for we're looking at the U.S. Department of State's Art in Embassies Program that not only beautifies the spaces where diplomacy happens, but also promotes cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration through visual arts. Did you know that diplomacy even affects the ocean? Ocean diplomacy involves the use of negotiations and diplomatic strategy to address maritime issues. Some global ocean challenges include climate change, the collection and use of maritime resources, fishing, trade, national security, and pollution.

The United Nations has passed multiple frameworks regarding ocean diplomacy, most recently the High Seas Treaty. These international treaties outline many terms relevant to ocean diplomacy, including exclusive economic zones, territorial seas, and navigation rights.

Ocean diplomacy affects many countries around the world, even those that are landlocked. Effective ocean diplomacy requires engagement and cooperation with a wide variety of states and nongovernmental stakeholders, including international organizations, scientists, and more.
