Meanwhile, Douglas who was his Democratic Party opponent in the debates made many partisan remarks such as Douglas’ accusations that members of the “Black Republican” party were abolitionists, including Lincoln [19] and he cited Lincoln’s House Divided Speech as proof in which he said: “I believe this government cannot endure permanently half Slave and half Free.”

Of course, one can split hairs and argue that their *immediate* goal was to stop the spread of slavery into any new territories & states. However, their ultimate goal was quite openly the total abolition of slavery.
