🍀 Wilkes County 4-H Alumni & Friends Spotlight: Annette Gage Dogen
As we continue our Wilkes County 4-H Alumni & Friends Spotlight Series, we are excited to shine our light on Annette Gage Dodgen, a longtime Wilkes County 4-H volunteer and parent who continues to give her time and talents to support local youth.
Over the years, Annette has been involved with Wilkes County 4-H in many ways, including assisting with the .22 r***e program, helping with Farm Safety Camp, and volunteering as a coach and advisor for the goat show team.
For Annette, her involvement with 4-H has provided an opportunity to stay busy, connected, and engaged with young people in our community. Some of her favorite 4-H memories center around watching her daughter, Lydia, succeed through the program—including winning in Performing Arts/Drama at State in 2020 and finishing 4th overall in Goat Showmanship in 2019.
Today, Annette continues to volunteer and support Wilkes County 4-H, sharing her time and experience with the next generation of 4-H'ers.
Her advice to today's youth is simple but meaningful: Get involved, stay involved, and take advantage of as many opportunities as you can—even beyond high school and college.
We are grateful for volunteers like Annette who continue to show up, lend a hand, and help create opportunities for young people to learn, grow, and succeed. Thank you, Annette, for being an important part of the Wilkes County 4-H family! 💚🍀
Once a 4-H'er, always a 4-H'er.

🍀 Going Green in Wilkes County! 💚
National 4-H Week is the perfect time to celebrate what makes 4-H so special — the people, the experiences, and the opportunities to grow.
From community service and leadership to cooking, livestock, summer camps, competitions, and everything in between, our Wilkes County 4-H’ers are learning by doing and making memories along the way.
Every photo tells a little piece of the 4-H story. And behind every photo is a young person learning, growing, leading, and becoming the best version of themselves.
We’re proud to GO GREEN with 4-H! 🍀💚

This week’s Native Plant Spotlight features the star of fall landscapes—Goldenrod (Solidago spp.)!

Goldenrod's bright yellow flowers provide an important source of late-season nectar and pollen when many other plants have finished blooming. Bees, butterflies, and many other beneficial insects visit the flowers, while some goldenrod species also provide seeds for birds.

One common misconception is that goldenrod causes fall allergies, but it usually isn't the culprit! Ragweed blooms around the same time and releases lightweight, wind-borne pollen. Goldenrod's pollen is heavier and is primarily moved by insects.

Why add Goldenrod to your landscape?

• Excellent late-season pollinator plant
• Bright fall color
• Supports beneficial insects
• Provides wildlife value
• Many native species to choose from
• Some species tolerate dry conditions
