National School Bus Safety Week

School buses are one of the safest ways for students to travel, but keeping children safe depends on all of us doing our part. School bus riders, and their families, count on every driver to make safe decisions.

Slow down, pay attention, and always stop when required by law. Every child deserves to get to school and back home safely. Not just during an awareness week, every day!

1. Flashing yellow lights: The bus is preparing to stop. Slow down and prepare to stop.

2. Flashing red lights and an extended stop arm: You must stop! Donโ€™t start moving again until the red lights stop flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving.

3. Two-lane roads: Traffic in both directions must stop, including roads with a center turn lane.

4. Four-lane roads: Only traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus is required to stop. Drivers traveling in the opposite direction should still use caution.

5. Intersections: Drivers approaching, following, or turning into the direction of the school bus must stop. Use caution around children crossing the road.

Missouri's school bus stop-arm penalties have increased!

Effective August 28, 2026, under SB 1421, receiving a ticket for failing to stop for a school bus loading or unloading is accompanied by a mandatory court appearance. A conviction for failing to stop carries 5 points and increased penalties, including:

1. First offense: A court-ordered license suspension and a fine of $500 to $1,000.

2. Second offense within 5 years: 90-day license suspension and a fine of $1,000 to $2,000.

3. Third or subsequent offense within 5 years: 180-day license suspension and a fine of $1,500 to $3,000.

4. Penalties are even more severe if a child is injured or killed
