Hollister House Garden A CLASSIC GARDEN in the English manner, with a loosely formal structure, informally planted in generous abundance situated in the Litchfield hills of CT.

Beautifully situated on a sloping, terraced site in the rolling hills of Litchfield County in northwestern Connecticut, Hollister House Garden is an American interpretation of such classic English gardens as Sissinghurst , Great Dixter and Hidcote, formal in its structure but informal and rather wild in its style of planting. Begun in 1979 by George Schoellkopf, the garden since that time has evolved under George’s direction into a unique synthesis of the formal and the natural, the right angles of paths, walls and hedges melting seamlessly into the lush surrounding landscape, which forms a magnificent backdrop to the garden’s exuberant plantings. Since 1993 Gerald Incandela has contributed greatly to the garden’s development with his artist’s eye trained on redefining the surrounding landscape. The garden is sited on the southeastern side of a rambling but serenely dignified eighteenth century house on 25 acres of mostly wooded countryside. Although the garden is in no way a recreation of an eighteenth century garden, it was nevertheless planned to complement the old house, and antique or hand made materials have been used wherever possible in its construction. Various eighteenth century barns and outbuildings are visible from the garden and further help to root it in the history of the place. The garden unfolds in successive layers of space and color with delightful informal vistas from one section to the next. Eight-to-ten-foot walls and hedges with dramatic changes in level define the progression of garden spaces – “rooms” as the English like to say – and create a firm architectural framework for the romantic abundance of the plantings. A winding brook and a large pond at the bottom of the lawn add to the variety of the garden scene.

Another one in the books! Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2026 Hollister House Garden Symposium.

A special thank you to our exceptional presenters, who kept guests engaged, inspired, and curious throughout the weekend: Arne Maynard, Lindsey Taylor, Tony Bielaczyc, Ethan Kauffman, and David Culp.

We were especially delighted to have authors George Schoellkopf and Stephen Orr for a conversation celebrating their recently published books of garden essays.

And, of course, a special recognition to Krista Adams, Head Gardener, who does a beautiful job keeping Hollister House Garden looking picture-perfect.

NEW DATE: Saturday, November 7th.

In 2019, Columbine began a thoughtful restoration of DeRham Farm, a historic estate overlooking the Hudson River in Garrison, New York. Working closely with the homeowners, the project focused on revitalizing the landscape while honoring the property’s historic character and extraordinary setting.

Highlights included the restoration of a sunken garden within the remnants of an old foundation and the creation of a vibrant one-third acre native meadow designed to support pollinators and biodiversity.

Join us as we explore the transformation of this remarkable landscape, and the process of shaping new garden spaces within a historic estate of a Historic Home.

NEW DATE: Sunday, October 4th 2-4pm!

Spend an afternoon in the stunning fields of The Fen in Sharon, Connecticut, with botanist and seed specialist Heather Liljengren for a hands-on workshop in native seed collection.

Set within expansive, species-rich meadows on a calcareous fen, The Fen is a native seed farm and regenerative land project seldom open to the public. This off-site field day offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from a field botanist in a working landscape shaped by seasonal rhythms, native plant communities, and careful stewardship.

Guided by Heather’s deep knowledge of plants and seed ecology, participants will learn how to recognize seed maturity, collect seed responsibly, and clean and prepare native seed for successful planting.

Each participant will leave with native ecotype seed they have collected themselves, ready to plant in their own garden.
