Vermont Hazardous Materials Response Team The State of Vermont HAZMAT Team was created in 1995 to assist all fire departments in Vermont when managing hazardous materials incidents.

Mission of the VTHazardous Materials Response Team is to offer the highest possible level of protection to the citizens and visitors of the State of VT from chemical, biological and radiological releases whether the release is intentional or accidental. The team’s authorizing legislation as well as the creation of the HAZMAT Team Chief can be found in Vermont Statutes, 20 V.S.A. § 33. The purpose for the Team’s creation was and remains to work with the fire chiefs before, during and after hazardous materials events in their municipalities. By having HAZMAT Technicians located across the entire State supported with three HAZMAT response vehicles, the Vermont HAZMAT Response Team (VHMRT) endeavors to have highly trained and equipped personnel on scene quickly when requested by the Incident Commander. In addition to the HAZMAT trucks, the Team can call upon any of the twenty HAZMAT trailers positioned in local fire departments around the State. These trailers contain equipment which may be used for operations level HAZMAT response as well as to perform “gross” and “technical” decontamination. The Team is housed in the Division of Fire Safety in the Department of Public Safety. To request the HAZMAT TEAM for an emergency call 1.800.641.5005

TRAINING MATTERS | VERMONT STATE HAZMAT

Just days before the Route 9 methyl methacrylate hazmat incident in Woodford, members of the Vermont State Hazardous Materials Response Team were in Bennington conducting joint training with the Bennington Village Fire Department.

The training focused on Hazardous Materials Operations-Level knowledge and decontamination (DECON) operations—critical skills that support safe and effective emergency response.

Bennington Fire Department is one of Vermont State Hazmat's valued partner departments, providing assistance to the State Hazmat Team throughout southwestern Vermont. Strong regional partnerships and consistent training ensure we're ready when communities need us most.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 22, 2026

SUBJECT: Vermont Route 9 continued closure - UPDATE

DATE/TIME OF INCIDENT: 9/21/26 at approximately 3:10 p.m.

INCIDENT NUMBER: 26HP010803

TYPE OF EVENT(S): Tractor trailer crash and removal

LOCATION OF EVENT(S): VT 9 in Woodford near the junction of VT 8

SUMMARY and UPDATE:

VT 9 in Woodford near the junction of VT 8 remains closed while crews from multiple agencies work at the scene of a commercial motor vehicle crash. The trailer/cargo tank that remains at the scene is not leaking, but its contents must be pumped into a separate specialized trailer prior to removal. The removal of the vehicle and its contents (UN1247, Methyl Methacrylate) is a complex process that requires the expertise of the Vermont State Hazmat Team as well as the shipper of the product, Action Resources, LLC.

Out of an abundance of caution, a 1,000-foot exclusionary zone has been established surrounding the cargo tank. Agencies remaining on scene at this time include Bennington Rural Fire, Bennington Village Fire, Republic Services, and Green Mountain Flagging.

This event is expected to continue through Thursday morning. Periodic updates will be provided regarding the projected reopening of VT 9. All travelers are advised to seek alternate routes.
