Thank you to Cara MacDonald, who is serving as our campaign manager, for her courageous response to the right-wing apologia recently published in The Day. I can’t begin to imagine the toll that it takes to share something so personal and so traumatic so publicly. Thank you, Cara, for standing up for others and working tirelessly to create a world in which no one else has to suffer similarly. 💜

Powell's Column is Indefensible
In his latest article published by The Day newspaper, Chris Powell offers his indefensible and repulsive opinion on the gang r**e of a female student at Cornell University.
When a drunk driver kills a family, do we question why the family was on the road in the first place? Do we ask whether the family should have been driving at night or in the rain? Of course not. That would be absurd and patently disrespectful to the victims.
Despite his recognition that sexual violence is a pervasive problem on college campuses, Powell espouses the same tired and ignorant narrative that women are to blame when they are r**ed and that young men are inherently predatory. Both sentiments are misguided and deeply damaging.
Truthfully, I am envious of Powell’s ignorance. I envy his inability to understand the torment of years of recurring nightmares, suicidal ideation and other debilitating symptoms of PTSD that I experienced after I foolishly allowed myself to be sexually assaulted at the age of 15.
Antiquated rhetoric like Powell’s represents a resurgence of malicious misogyny that has become acceptable again in Trump’s America. Republican politicians running for office alongside Trump who are silent or who blame victims, as Powell does in his piece, are complicit in this cruelty. We have the power to reject this. Consider the Jane Does when you cast your ballot.

Chris Powell’s column that ran in the Oct. 17 edition should not have been published. It was an error in judgment.
