WUHS Graduate, Casey Fredrick, recently completed a new mural at the Waterford Public Library. We wanted to catch up with Casey and feature her as our next alumni spotlight ✨
1.) What year did you graduate? I graduated from Waterford Union High School in 2019.
2.) What have you been up to since graduating from Waterford Union High School?
After graduating, I attended the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and majored in Illustration. I have since had the privilege to illustrate children's books, graphic novels and have recently begun taking on mural work. The director of the Waterford Public Library, Jessica Kiesler, reached out to me as she was wanting to add some murals to the children's area. I had never imagined painting a mural that large, but you never know what you can do until you try. I took that leap and was able to create something wonderful! After two months of painting, I created a mural for the Waterford Public Library that encapsulated the vibrancy and nature surrounding the Fox River. Since then, I have begun doing more murals. I am also currently putting together book pitches for both a new graphic novel and children's book.
3.) How did Waterford Union High School help prepare you for life after graduation?
The wide variety of art mediums in the Art Department and Theater Department helped me explore different types of art and ways of creating things. I was able to build foundational skills that I was able to build from and learn to eventually break. My art now uses a hybrid of traditional ink, paint and digital mediums that come together cohesively. My process is ever growing, and I'm never scared to take on a new medium or project.
The English department was extremely helpful for my comic book and graphic novel career. The skills learned in English help me create scripts with fleshed out settings, conflicts, themes, characters, and plots. My favorite class was Creative Writing when in school. In that class, I was forced to write outside my comfort zone and learned to push the boundaries of what I know and what I think I can do. The same skills that I use to write my own scripts also help me digest scripts from potential collaborators and publishers. Creating a comic from a script isn't just drawing what you read. You have to consider the aforementioned concepts such as conflicts, themes, characters, and the overall plot. A picture is worth a thousand words, and sometimes scripts don't have any or limited dialogue. So, you have to convey complex emotions and ideas strictly through imagery. It is a very rewarding process start to finish.
4.) Favorite memory while attending Waterford Union High School?
My favorite memories while at Waterford Union High School are those in the FFA club and Theater Department. I was primarily in FFA to hang with friends, but I learned so much about animals and community while attending different events and activities. I didn't join Theater until my senior year and I deeply regretted it. I am so lucky for the time spent on stage and behind the scenes designing and building the set and getting out of my comfort zone.
