The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department is hosting the Youth Academy this week, with Day 2 focused on exploring Monroe County’s justice system.

Participants toured the Courthouse, Dispatch Center, Circuit Clerk’s Office, Court Reporter’s Office, State’s Attorney’s Office, and the Judge’s Chambers, gaining firsthand insight into the many roles that work together to serve our community.

Following the tours, court personnel presented a mock trial involving a stolen candy bar. The exercise provided an engaging look at how a trial is conducted and introduced the youth to the various individuals involved in courtroom proceedings. After hearing the evidence and arguments, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty.

We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in this year’s Youth Academy and help educate the next generation about the judicial process. ⚖️

⚖️ FACTUAL FRIDAY⚖️

Not all felonies are created equal… 👀

Illinois breaks them into levels of severity.
From lowest to highest ⬇️
👉 Class 4 Felony
👉 Class 3 Felony
👉 Class 2 Felony
👉 Class 1 Felony
👉 Class X Felony

Then ⬇️
👉 First Degree Murder

What changes as you go up? ⬇️
👉 More prison time
👉 Less chance of probation and in the State of Illinois, lower-level felonies have multiple presumptions of probation to overcome before a prison sentence will be given.

In Illinois…
The felony class can matter just as much as the charge itself.

⚖️ FUN FACT FRIDAY⚖️

Not all criminal cases are felonies… 👀

Some are CM cases
(Criminal Misdemeanors)

Misdemeanor classes ⬇️
👉 Class C: up to 30 days in jail
👉 Class B: up to 6 months in jail
👉 Class A: up to 364 days in jail

BUT ⬇️

👉 Jail isn’t the only outcome
👉 Many cases involve probation, fines, or supervision
👉 Some can still impact your record long-term

“Just a misdemeanor” ≠ no consequences

In Illinois...

A CM case might be less significant than a felony...but it can still have significant consequences 🔥

Again, if you have any questions about our Friday posts please bring them to our May 22, 2026 Coffee and Conversation, or call the office.
