INTRODUCING PROJECT BLUE BRIDGE!
The Watertown Police Department is excited to introduce Project Blue Bridge, a voluntary program designed to help create safer, smoother interactions between law enforcement and community members who may need additional time, patience, or communication support.
How does it work?
💙 Blue Bridge ID Card: Carry it in your wallet, on a keychain, or wherever works best for you. The card helps officers recognize that you may need additional time or assistance communicating and can help us locate emergency contact information more quickly.
💙 Blue Bridge Vehicle Envelope: Keep important information together in one easy-to-identify blue envelope, including vehicle registration, proof of insurance, a copy of your driver's license, emergency contact information, and optional communication information.
These tools may be helpful for individuals with autism, dementia, mental health conditions, sensory or communication differences, traumatic brain injuries, or may have difficulties in stressful or unplanned interactions.
Why does it matter? During a traffic stop, accident, or other police interaction, stress can make communication difficult. Project Blue Bridge gives individuals a way to communicate their needs and helps officers better understand how to approach the interaction.
A few important things to know:
✔️ Participation is voluntary.
✔️ Individuals choose what information they provide.
✔️ Participants can cancel at any time.
✔️ Project Blue Bridge does not excuse violations or prevent lawful enforcement or investigation. It is a communication and safety tool to help everyone navigate interactions more effectively.
