Behind every Head Start classroom is a team of dedicated people helping children and families thrive.

Teachers, family service professionals, bus drivers, health staff, cooks, program leaders, and so many others bring their expertise and commitment to Head Start every day.

This Head Start Awareness Month, we want to thank our Head Start staff here at CAPC for the important work they do for our children, families, and our community

Head Start programs are competing for talent in the same labor market as major employers.

In 2025, the average Head Start assistant teacher earned $18.43 an hour. Company-reported benchmarks show a $20 starting wage at Costco and a $23 fulfillment base average at Amazon. These are not directly comparable occupational estimates, but they help illustrate the wage pressure programs face.

When programs cannot recruit and retain enough staff, they cannot open every funded classroom. Investing in the Head Start workforce is also an investment in access for children and families.
