The Waterville Public Library is closed on Monday, October 12, 2026, for Indigenous Peoples' Day. Regular services will resume on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day honors the histories, cultures, and perspectives of Indigenous peoples and their ancestors who lived on the land now known as North America. They existed in these areas for thousands of years before the first European explorers arrived. This day promotes awareness of Indigenous peoples’ struggles, resilience, and unique traditions, fostering understanding and unity among diverse cultures.

Wednesday October 21 and Friday the 23rd are your chances to see this amazing opportunity to see a rare piece of our country's history.

On Wednesday October 21 and Friday the 23rd, view one of the most famous documents in American history -- the Dunlap broadside printing of the Declaration of Independence. Part of the Maine Historical Society’s collection, the document is one of only 26 extant copies of the first printings of the Declaration, sent from Philadelphia to spread the word of declared independence from Britain in 1776.

MHS has been exhibiting the Declaration around Maine as part of the 250th “Revolutionary Maine” tour, and in two weeks it will land at the Cultural Building where it will be displayed in the Maine State Archives alongside other Revolutionary War era documents from the state’s collection. We expect a big turnout, so reserve your place in line here: https://mainehistory.rezgo.com/details/425467/declaration-of-independence-tour-maine-state-cultural-building

On Wednesday night, Dr. Liam Riordan of UMO will give a talk in the State Library – What Should We Remember About the Declaration of Independence in 2026 - rsvp here: https://mainehistory.rezgo.com/details/434271/maine-state-library-and-lithgow-public-library-present-an-evening-with-the-declaration

We hope to see you in Augusta!
