Introducing another VSP critical area: Fish and Wildlife Habitat Conservation Areas!

The shrubsteppe ecosystem found in Douglas County is very important for many species! Douglas County VSP works with landowners to protect and restore fish and wildlife habitat through cost share and technical assistance.

Planting native trees and shrubs, treating noxious w**ds, and installing in-stream structures helps to improve habitat for fish and wildlife. Choosing wildlife friendly fencing over traditional barbed wire fencing and installing sage grouse fence markers are great ways to help improve wildlife compatibility with local agriculture.

To learn more about these practices that benefit fish and wildlife habitat or explore our critical areas map, check out the Douglas County VSP web page at https://www.fostercreekcd.org/vsp!

Wetlands are one of the five critical areas of conservation under the Voluntary Stewardship Program (VSP), but why are they so important, and how are they protected under VSP?

Wetlands provide essential ecological functions by protecting water quality, reducing flooding, stabilizing shorelines, and providing valuable habitat for fish and wildlife. Douglas County VSP works with landowners to protect and restore this valuable resource through cost share and technical assistance.

There are many practices that landowners voluntarily install that help protect wetlands! Habitat plantings, in-stream restoration, noxious w**d control, and managing livestock access protect and enhance valuable native vegetation and habitat. Managing livestock access and effective nutrient management protect soil structure and water quality.

To learn more about VSP and explore our critical areas map, check out the Douglas County VSP web page at https://www.fostercreekcd.org/vsp !

Foster Creek CD presents: BMP Learning Lab!๐ŸŒพ

This week: the Conservation Reserve Program, a program that compensates farmers for setting aside their most ecologically sensitive land and maintaining it as natural habitat instead of cultivating it.

In this 5-part video series, discover how environmental stewardship and agriculture can be one and the same thing through a range of sustainable techniques that build and protect the soils we all rely on.

๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’งThank you to the Washington Department of Ecology for providing the resources needed to provide these services!

Field season is slowly coming to an end this year, and with it we are wrapping up some seasonal monitoring projects! Most recently we finished conducting a Stream Health Monitoring protocol for several of our restoration sites along Foster Creek near Bridgeport, WA, a protocol that is part of the Watershed Health Monitoring program from the Washington Department of Ecology. Check out what we're looking at here!

Thank you to the Department of Ecology for providing the funding we need to be able to keep an eye on how our watersheds are healing in response to our restoration efforts!

Foster Creek CD presents: BMP Learning Lab!๐ŸŒพ

This week: crop rotation, a single term that covers all the specially tailored plans that have different, carefully selected species of crop grow on the same plot of land in succession over time.

In this 5-part video series, discover how environmental stewardship and agriculture can be one and the same thing through a range of sustainable techniques that build and protect the soils we all rely on.

This week: conservation tillage, an umbrella term covering a collection of reduced- and no-till strategies that minimize soil disturbance and keep plant residue on the land during fallow periods.

In this 5-part video series, discover how environmental stewardship and agriculture can be one and the same thing through a range of sustainable techniques that build and protect the soils we all rely on.
