Watching the excitement on kids’ faces when they see the firetruck will never get old. Thanks to the Waukee Public Library for inviting us to Fire Safety Storytime. We had so much fun talking about safety and how to get help if there is an emergency.

While costumes and candy are great fun, it’s important to keep safety in mind. Here are a few quick tips to keep your night spook-tacular and safe.

1. Make sure your costume fits well. If it’s too long or baggy, it could trip you up when you’re crossing the street or running to the next house.
2. Wear light colored clothing, carry a flashlight or add some reflective gear or glow-in-the-dark accessories. The brighter you are, the better drivers and others can see you.
3. Think about swapping a mask for makeup. Some masks can block your view which makes it hard to see cars, other people or tripping hazards.

Lithium-ion batteries are useful but can be very dangerous. This video from the Urbandale Fire Department shows just how fast a battery can catch on fire. If your battery gets hot, makes a popping or hissing sound, or something doesn’t seem right with your device, stop using it immediately and call 911.

Cardiac arrest can happen anytime and anywhere. Would your child know what to do? Whether they’re babysitting, spending time with grandparents or out with friends, having the skills to respond in an emergency can make a huge difference.

On Monday, October 26, the no-school day, we’re offering a Youth CPR class from 9-11:30 a.m. Participants will learn how to perform CPR, use an AED and help someone who is choking. Register by October 20 at Waukee.org/Registration under the “Youth Programs” tab.

Although Fire Prevention Week is coming to an end, using batteries safely is important every day to prevent fires. Take a few minutes to talk with your kids, too!

1. Only use the charger that comes with your device.
2. Set an alarm so you can unplug the device when it’s 100% charged.
3. After plugging in your device, set it on a hard, flat surface.
4. When charging large devices, like e-scooters, plug them in outside when possible.
5. If you hear popping or see smoke, stop using your device immediately and call 911.

If your device is smoking, popping or getting really hot, that could mean the battery is damaged. Stop using it right away, go outside and call 911. Damaged batteries can quickly catch fire, especially if you see smoke.

Your child has been riding their scooter all day and now it’s time to charge it. You wheel it into the garage, plug it in and head to bed. Sounds convenient, right? But it’s not a safe choice. Larger devices like scooters should be charged outside. If you do need to charge one in your garage, keep it away from anything that could catch on fire. And set a timer so you can unplug it when it’s fully charged.

When it’s time for bed, don’t forget about your phone. After you set your alarm and put it down for the night, make sure it’s charging on a nightstand or another hard, flat surface. Never charge your phone under your pillow or on your bed. Overheated batteries increase the risk of fire.

10/06/2026

Your charger doesn’t reach your phone when you’re lying in bed, so you ordered a cheap 6-foot charger online. It’s not worth the risk. Stick with the charger that came with your device or use one made by the same manufacturer. Using the wrong charger can increase the risk of your battery overheating and starting a fire. And once your device hits 100%, unplug it.

Take a look around you. How many rechargeable batteries are within arm’s reach? As Fire Prevention Week kicks off, we want to help you stay aware of the lithium-ion batteries around your home. When they aren’t charged safely or properly taken care of, they can increase the risk of starting a fire. Follow along with our video series this week as we share simple ways you can stay safe when using lithium-ion batteries.
