Over the past few weeks, the Waukegan Fire Department has been busy training to enhance its membersโ€™ skills and readiness for the community.

Trench Rescue: First-In Stabilization

Lt. Kolar and members of the departmentโ€™s Technical Rescue Team (TRT) led training on responding first to a trench incident. Members learned how to help stabilize the scene before TRT technicians arrive. They also became familiar with the air shores and other specialized equipment the TRT uses.

High-Rise Roof HVAC Fire

Thanks to Par National Properties, members trained on a simulated high-rise roof HVAC fire at 2504 Washington St. The property gave crews a realistic setting in which to practice.

Passenger Rail Emergency Preparedness

Training continued with Metra, which taught members how to handle commuter rail emergencies. The session included a mock drill simulating a train-versus-car incident. Members approached the train with caution, communicated with the engineer and passengers, treated and removed injured civilians, and used emergency door and window release mechanisms. They worked under the Incident Command System alongside Waukegan Police, Metra Police and other agencies.

๐Ÿš’ Training Together for a Safer Community! ๐Ÿš“๐Ÿš†

This past Saturday, the Waukegan Fire Department joined the Waukegan Police Department and members of Newport Fire for a full-scale training exercise involving a Metra train.

A simulated vehicle strike involving a train allowed our teams to practice emergency response procedures, strengthen interagency coordination, and prepare for real-world emergencies.

Thank you to all the agencies and personnel who participated in this important training. Working together helps ensure weโ€™re ready to respond when our community needs us most!

๐Ÿš’ Fire Prevention Week 2026 | October 5โ€“9 ๐Ÿš’
Fire Prevention Week is underway, and our crews have been out in the community each morning connecting with students at our public schools!
Throughout the week, members of the Waukegan Fire Department have greeted students as they arrived at school, participated in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Battalion Chief Moss also stopped by with Mackie, our K-9s For Comfort dog, who quickly became a favorite among the students. The smiles, excitement, and gentle pets Mackie received were a wonderful reminder of the positive connections our department has with the children and families we serve.
We are proud to be part of our schools and grateful for the opportunity to engage with our community beyond emergency response. Thank you to our crews, school staff, and students for helping make Fire Prevention Week a great week of community connection! โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅ
From our firehouse to our schools โ€” weโ€™re proud to serve you.

Waukegan Firefighter/Paramedic Ugalde, who also works for LifeNet out of McHenry, IL, conducted helicopter landing zone setup and safety training for the Waukegan Fire Department.
This training will continue over the next two days and will be provided to all members. Landing zone (LZ) training helps our firefighters develop the skills necessary to quickly identify and address potential hazards, control debris and dust, establish perimeter security, and safely load patients.
A special thank you to FF/Paramedic Ugalde, as well as American Outfitters and AB Specialty, for allowing us to use the property between their businesses to conduct this valuable training.
