Congratulations to our Board of Education on earning the Illinois Association of School Boards' 2026 School Board Governance Recognition! The award honors school boards that demonstrate a commitment to effective governance through ongoing professional development, training, and participation in activities that strengthen board leadership.

The Board was one of just 53 school boards statewide to receive this honor, marking Waukegan's first recognition since 2012. The award was presented this week during the IASB Lake Division Dinner, hosted at Waukegan High School's Brookside Campus.

We also congratulate Board Members Ms. Anita Hanna and Mr. Rick Riddle, who received individual honors for their continued commitment to professional development and board leadership.

Congratulations to Mr. Garcia, Mathematics and Computer Science teacher at our Brookside Campus, whose article, “The Curious Mind of Generation Alpha Students in 6eome7ry,” was published in the Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics journal!

Mr. Garcia transformed the popular Generation Alpha slang “67” into a hands-on Geometry project, challenging students to design laser-and-mirror art installations while exploring symmetry, angles, and other geometric concepts.

His innovative approach shows how connecting student culture with mathematics makes learning Dynamic, Active, Participative, and Timely (DAPT).

Congratulations, Mr. Garcia, on this exciting achievement and for showcasing the power of creative teaching at Brookside!
