The Wisconsin Department of Transportation
(WisDOT) will rebuild I-94 between 70th Street and 16th Street in Milwaukee County to replace aging infrastructure and improve safety
through modernized design and reduced congestion.

⚾ Congratulations to the Milwaukee Brewers on their World Series win! We will be keeping all ramps at General Mitchell Boulevard open for traffic shuttling to and from the parade tomorrow. Following the weekend, the I-94 eastbound exit to General Mitchell Boulevard and the General Mitchell Boulevard entrance to I-94 westbound will close long-term by 5 a.m. Monday, November 2 through spring 2027. ⚾

🚧REMINDER🚧

The I-94 eastbound exit ramp to General Mitchell Boulevard and the General Mitchell Boulevard entrance ramp to I-94 westbound closed this morning through late March 2027.

⚾NOTE: All General Mitchell Boulevard ramps will be open and available for use on Brewers home playoff game days. ⚾

For EB exit - use I-94 eastbound to WIS 175 southbound to Frederick Miller Way to General Mitchell Boulevard
For WB entrance - use Blue Mound Road to 84th Street to I-94 westbound

🚧 UPCOMING IMPACTS 🚧

The West Leg segment is scheduled to enter its next phase of work the week of October 12. The following long-term closures are scheduled as part of this work:

⛔ I-94 eastbound exit to General Mitchell Boulevard through spring 2027
⛔ General Mitchell Boulevard entrance to I-94 westbound through spring 2027

NOTE: All General Mitchell Boulevard ramps will be open and available for use on Brewers home playoff game days. ⚾️

Please plan ahead, allow extra travel time and use caution when traveling through the work zone. 🚗

🚧 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE 🚧

Crews demolished the outer portion of the I-94 westbound bridge over 70th Street earlier this week, clearing the way for girder setting later this week.

The westbound bridge at 70th Street is the last of four bridges along the West Leg to be temporarily widened. This work is part of a larger effort to prepare the freeway for an upcoming traffic shift.�

Later this fall, the westbound I-94 lanes will be temporarily widened to accommodate both eastbound and westbound traffic on the westbound side of the freeway next spring while crews reconstruct the eastbound side.�

It’s another behind-the-scenes step that will help set the stage for the next phase of the project.

🚧 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE 🚧

Friday night marked a big milestone as crews poured the first concrete lanes of the I-94 East-West Freeway Project. About ¼ mile of new eastbound lanes were poured between Hawley Road and Zablocki Drive.

Concrete paving will continue this week and next as crews work toward completing the new eastbound lanes in the cemetery section.

🚗 Next up: Traffic is scheduled to shift onto the new eastbound lanes in October.

📸 PHOTO UPDATE 📸

There’s been a lot of progress along eastbound I-94, in the cemetery section of the West Leg, over the past few months!

Crews have been busy widening the roadway, building the retaining wall along the south side of the freeway, installing storm sewer and preparing the new lanes for paving. All of the work occurred within the existing WisDOT right of way, so no graves were disturbed during construction.

NEXT UP: Concrete paving is expected to begin Friday night. Once the new pavement is ready, traffic is scheduled to switch onto the new eastbound lanes in this section in October.

🔹 LABOR DAY WORK RESTRICTIONS 🔹

Entering into the holiday weekend, all freeway work will be suspended from noon today through 6 a.m. Tuesday morning, September 8. In our freeway work zones, at least two lanes will be open in each direction, with no overnight closures scheduled.
