Today, we are proud to recognize one of our newest lieutenants, Lt. Jerrod Christensen Although Jerrod has been serving in the lieutenant role for a little while now, today he received his red helmet and shield.

While the red helmet and shield are important symbols of leadership, Jerrod earned the respect and recognition of his fellow firefighters long before receiving them. His peers already saw him as a leader, and today we recognize what they have known for some time.
Lt. Christensen does an outstanding job mentoring our newest firefighters, helping them develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to succeed. He also goes above and beyond the firehouse, leading our department's fundraising efforts for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Leadership isn't just about the rank you wear or the color of your helmet. It's about the example you set, the people you help develop, and your willingness to step up and serve others.

Congratulations, Lt. Christensen! Thank you for your dedication, leadership, and commitment to making our department and community better.
Keep up the outstanding work, Lieutenant!

Investing in Training. Strengthening Fire Prevention.

The Wausau Fire Department Prevention Division is attending the Wisconsin State Fire Inspectors Association (WSFIA) Conference for a week of professional training, education, and collaboration with fire prevention professionals from across Wisconsin.

🔥 Today's training topics include:

1. Interactive Tools for Fire & Life Safety
2. Sprinkler Plan Review
3. Overview of Fire Alarm Systems

Continuing education helps our inspectors stay current with fire protection technology, inspection practices, and life safety standards. The knowledge gained this week will help us continue protecting Wausau residents, businesses, and visitors.

Prevention through education. Protection through knowledge.

🚒 Community Partnerships That Save Lives! 🚒

A big THANK YOU to In The Lite Electric for their generous donation to the Wausau Fire Department's Fire Prevention Program!

Their donation will help us purchase hardwired smoke alarms for residents who may not otherwise be able to afford them, helping ensure more families have this important, lifesaving protection in their homes. 🏠🔥

In addition to their financial support, In The Lite has offered to partner with us to install hardwired smoke alarms for residents who are unable or uncomfortable installing them themselves. This partnership will help us reach even more residents and make our community safer!

We are grateful for their generosity, their commitment to fire safety, and their willingness to give back to the community.

Congratulations to In The Lite on 25 years in business! We're honored to be part of your 25 Acts of Kindness campaign. And thank you for the treats for our firefighters, too!

👏 Thank you for helping us make Wausau a safer place to live!

🔥 Fire Safety Tip: Extension Cords & Appliances

Not every appliance is safe to use with an extension cord. High-powered appliances can draw more electricity than an extension cord is designed to handle, causing the cord or connections to overheat and potentially start a fire.

Plug appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, space heaters, hair dryers, and microwaves directly into a wall outlet unless the manufacturer specifically states otherwise.

Extension cords can also cause a voltage drop that may damage appliances with motors, pumps, or other sensitive components.

🔌 Before using an extension cord, check the appliance’s owner’s manual. If it says to plug directly into a wall outlet, follow that guidance.

A convenient extension cord isn’t worth the fire risk.

Plug it in safely. Prevent electrical fires. 🔥🚒

A Historic Day for the Future of the Fire Service

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the signing of apprenticeship contracts for the individuals selected to be part of our first Registered Firefighter/Paramedic Apprenticeship Program!

These apprentices are beginning an 18-month journey of learning, training, and service. Through a unique partnership between Northcentral Technical College (NTC) and the Wausau Fire Department (WFD), they will receive classroom education at NTC while working alongside WFD professionals giving them the opportunity to immediately apply what they learn in school to real-world emergencies.

A program like this does not happen without tremendous collaboration. It is the result of the hard work, vision, and commitment of many dedicated professionals and partner organizations who believed in creating a new pathway into the fire service.

We were honored to have several of our partners and community leaders join us for the signing ceremony, including Governor Tony Evers; NTC President Dr. Jeannie Worden; Wausau Mayor Doug Diny; and IAFF Local 415 President Adam Rahn.

To our nine apprentices: congratulations! You have an incredible 18 months ahead of you. Learn everything you can, take advantage of every opportunity, and know that an entire community is behind you.

The future of the fire service is being built right here in Wausau.
