We are two days away from our Wisconsin Primary Election (8/11/26). This is everyone's chance to become part of Wisconsin's largest HR department. On Tuesday, we get to narrow down the number of candidates we will eventually choose from in November, and then eventually hire for our governmental positions.
I will admit, I am not a big fan of having to choose a single party in primary elections, as there are important races in both major parties. So, my first decision has to be which primary races are most concerning, or most in doubt, and then vote with that party.
Then, like any good HR person, I have to decide which candidate would be best for the position I am hiring for. Many years ago, after I was placed in charge of the hiring processes at my then employer, I told my boss that it is essential to hire good people first and foremost. As I stated to him at the time, "I can train a person to be a good employee, but I can't train someone to be a good person." The same thought applies now as it did then.
So, in every election I apply that same philosophy. I look for who strikes me as a good person first, then I transition to who do I believe will be best for the job.
Another aspect of elections I try to stay away from is equating the fact that I am not voting for someone with the erroneous assumption that I believe they are a bad person. You can most certainly be a good person and also not be the best person for the job. Not voting for someone does not always speak to their character. Most times, it is just that they were running against a person that I thought was a better fit for the position.
Lastly, I know that it is often difficult to find that "good person" given the fact that we are only given carefully curated information. But with all the commercials we see and hear, the one theme that is an instant turn off for me is a campaign that spends an inordinate amount of time speaking poorly of their opponents. "Mudslinging".
Our current Governor's race is a great example of this. It seems like many candidates in the WI Governor's race like to waste a lot of their time reaching out to the public with negative comments about another candidate. I am not a fan of that kind of advertising, and, to me, it speaks negatively to the character of the candidate doing the advertising rather than the candidate they are speaking about.
From everything I have been hearing, it sounds like we will have a great turnout in Waushara County. I am a frequent worker of the polls in the Town of Wautoma, as I will be on Tuesday, and nothing makes me more proud than to see great voter turnout numbers in our Township and our County.
I look forward to seeing all the Town of Wautoma voters on Tuesday afternoon!
