When searching for a job, your first impression often happens long before you meet an employer. From submitting applications and résumés to scheduling interviews, much of today's professional communication happens through email. So, what does your email address say about you? That clever or funny email address you created years ago might not make the impression you want today!
📧 Keep it simple and professional. Use your first and last name whenever possible. If your name is common, try adding an initial or a simple number.
🚫 Avoid questionable usernames. Nicknames, suggestive phrases, references to drugs or alcohol, or numbers with inappropriate associations (like 69 or 420) can send the wrong message.
✍️ Use a professional signature. Your full name and phone number are usually all you need. And don't forget to check the display name recipients see when you send an email!
📬 Check your inbox regularly. Interview invitations and important messages can easily be missed. Consider creating a separate email account just for your job search.
💡 Remember: Your email address doesn't define your qualifications, but small details can influence first impressions. Don't let something so easily corrected distract an employer from the skills and experience you have to offer.
A little professionalism can go a long way!
