Military History Class Seeks Donations for DAV Field of Flags

Wayland-Cohocton Central School’s American Military History Class aims to honor all American veterans this Veteran’s Day. This November WCCS American Military History students will build a field of flags in front of the middle school to honor all American fighting men and women; past, present, and future.

“The amount of flags that we receive in our field is determined by the amount of money that we raise for DAV(Disabled American Veterans),” said Mr. Flower, Military History Teacher. DAV is a nonprofit charity that provides a lifetime of support for veterans of all generations and their families, helping more than 1 million veterans in positive, life-changing ways each year. Last year, the organization provided more than 246,000 rides to veterans attending medical appointments and assisted in filing over 209,000 claims for benefits. In 2025, DAV-represented veterans received more than $33 billion in earned benefits. DAV’s services are offered at no cost to all generations of veterans, their families and survivors. Over the past two years we have raised close to $1,500.00 in our school community for this charity.

From the frozen fields of Valley Forge to the sands of the Middle East, American fighting men and women have stood as guardians of freedom, answering the call to defend the ideals that define our nation. From the mud in the trenches of World War I to the beaches of places like Normandy and Iwo Jima during World War II, American fighting men and women have defeated tyranny and protected liberty. Through the bitter winters of Korea and the jungles of Vietnam, American soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines endured unimaginable hardship to uphold the promise of freedom for others. During modern conflicts in the Middle East, American service members have faced new enemies and new challenges, carrying forward with the same courage and sense of duty.

The annual physical education field trip to Hemlock and Canadice lakes took sophomores and juniors on a hiking, kayaking and mountain biking excursion enjoying the fresh crisp autumn air. Thanks to assistance from Canadice Lake Outfitters and the WCCS Maintenance Department the field trip works seamlessly. And thank you to Mr. Knapp for the history lessons along the way! The trip is organized by high school physical education teachers Steve Wager and Luca Fahmer.

The Golden Eagle Award recipients for the week of October 14th are Molly Robbins and Abigail Loop. Molly and Abby were nominated for the Golden Eagle Award because of all their help with the senior class dance during the fall pep rally. They were a huge part in choreographing, organizing and planning logistics for the senior dance this year. The two of them, along with their friends, worked during the summer to put together the music and find inspiration for the dance. They encouraged their classmates to participate, and ran practices during 13th period for two weeks prior to the pep rally.

In addition to all their help with the senior class, Molly and Abby are great role models on the soccer team, keeping a good attitude at all practices and games.

Each week, Wayland-Cohocton High School recognizes students for exhibiting characteristics such as being strong in character, open-minded, achievement-oriented or respectful - exemplifying the SOAR core values! Each week, the High School will share the outstanding efforts of a student or students who demonstrate these attributes.

In early October sophomores and juniors were offered the opportunity for a physical education field trip designed to show them the beauty of our region and give them an opportunity to mountain bike, kayak and hike in the great outdoors. Each group (juniors and sophomores) tripped to Canadice and Hemlock lakes on different days. Each day begins with a walk down Rob’s Trail hiking all the way to Hemlock Lake Park. Students had a picnic lunch and got a little history lesson from Mr. Knapp. A few kids even had fishing gear with them and fished during the break. Back on the buses and the next leg of the adventure is to Canadice Lake. Each day’s group split in half with one half taking to kayaks and the other taking to mountain bikes. Wayland-Cohocton’s maintenance department hauls the district’s mountain bikes up to Canadice like they are stored overnight by the Canadice Lake Outfitters, from whom the district rents the kayaks for the lake excursion. (The folks at Canadice Outfitters have been known to supply some treats over the years as well.) While half the group biked around the lake, the other half kayaked across the lake and then swapped gear to complete the other activity. The foliage was just starting to turn and the air was fresh and cool, pleasant for the activities. For many students it was their first trip to either of the locations and for many a first time kayaking. Coach Wager says it's a great way to introduce kids to life-activities that are affordable and in our own region; plus - riding the mountain bikes around Canadice Lake is a lot more fun than riding them around the campus.
