Packanack Lake Fire Co 5 responded to a reported basement fire on Hillside Terrace. First arriving units found smoke coming from the side of the house and the homeowner reporting no occupants or pets were inside. Crews from Co5 pulled hoses into the basement and first floor quickly knocking down the fire, and containing it to a finished part of the basement. Co5 worked along side all 5 wayne fire companies, the Wayne First Aid Squad Wayne Police and Wayne Fire Bureau to provide a rapid knockdown and ensure the safety of all on scene. Special Thank you to all the Mutual Aid towns who responded to backfill fire houses to ensure continued fire protection during this incident.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ex-Chief William Henry Butler “Butts,” a lifelong member of Packanack Lake Fire Company #5, who passed peacefully on Christmas Day at the age of 95.

Born and raised in Paterson, NJ, Bill made Packanack Lake his home in 1960 and joined Company #5 on February 11, 1963. Over 61 years of dedicated service, Bill rose through the ranks to serve many years as Assistant Chief and Chief, leading with integrity, discipline, and an unwavering commitment.

Even into his late 80s, Bill remained an active presence at the firehouse, supporting operations, handling paperwork, and always ready with a cup of coffee and conversation. He was not only a firefighter and officer, but a mentor, friend, and steady presence whose impact shaped our company and the generations who followed.

Bill’s legacy is woven into the fabric of Company #5. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the entire Packanack Lake community.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 3, 2026, at VanderMay Funeral Home. Visitation is from 12:00–3:00 PM, followed by services and a procession around Packanack Lake at approximately 4:30 PM.

Rest easy, Chief. Thank you for a lifetime of service.
