Congrats to Wesley Allison on obtaining his NC Fire Inspector Level I certification! Wes is one of our fire investigators and recently completed Fire Investigation Technician as well! Both of these certifications are rigorous, technical certifications. Thank you for all that you do for the department and our community!

Today we honor Chief Lawrence Kerley. Chief Kerley died on this day in 1942 from injuries he sustained while attempting to save others during a fire that happened three weeks before his death. A leaking storage tank at Standard Oil led to a catastrophic explosion. There were two civilian heroes killed that day, also. Standard Oil employee Walter Hardin and truck driver Thomas Taylor were both killed in the blast that injured Chief Kerley. All three were evacuating nearby residents.

We mourn with our WPD family along with Officer Singleton’s family. His decades of service to the Town and community are a testament to his character.

More so, EB was a true friend to many here at Waynesville Fire Department and he will be sorely missed.

Today, the world lost an incredible man and public servant. Eddie Singleton's decades of service to this community touched many lives. This includes generations of kids who came through Haywood County Schools and called him a friend. Those who worked beside him were better because of him and learned firsthand how to love those you serve. Our prayers are with his family, and today we mourn with them as they walk through this goodbye.
