Flow Management | 2027 Water Year General Timeline

Oct. 15 – Dec. 14 | 300 CFS Baseflow
Dec. 15 – Feb. 14 | Synchronized Storm Pulse Period
Feb. 15 – Apr. 14 | Wet-Season Flood Period
Apr. 15 – Variable | Snow Melt Peak & Recession
Variable – Oct. 14 | 450 CFS Baseflow

On Sept. 24, the Trinity Management Council concurred with the recommendation of the TRRP Flow Workgroup to implement environmental flows for the 2027 Water Year, which include the winter flow project ruleset. The recommendation will be sent to representatives to the Department of Interior for final approval.

Although the river is always changing, Trinity River enthusiasts can expect Lewiston dam operations of summer baseflow (450 cfs) to continue until Oct. 15 when operations drop flows to winter baseflow (300 cfs).

Channel Rehabilitation Update | Sawmill Gravel Processing Site

The Yurok Tribe Construction Corporation completed civil construction at the Sawmill Gravel Processing Site Channel Rehabilitation Project the week of September 21. Hoopa Valley Fisheries Department re-vegetation crews remain on-site to jumpstart the re-growth of native grasses, sedges, shrubs and trees in constructed areas.

These photos demonstrate dredger mining waste in riparian areas [1944], how the 1955 flood redistributed some mining tailings in riparian areas [1960], yet by 1971 the riparian berm built by consistent dam releases caused vegetation to block riparian habitat from the river's flow further channelizing the main path of the Trinity River.

Klamath Fish Health Assessment Team | Report Update

Conditions seem to be on a steady path to improvement as day lengths get shorter and daytime temps continue to cool. Major concerns in late August with Ich (primarily in the lower Trinity River) have abated, potentially due to the increased flow releases from Lewiston Dam (see photo 2 for HVTF staff observed infections). Overall, incoming adult fall Chinook have made their most substantial migratory push in the first half of September. After Sept. 13, the recreational fishery on the lower Klamath implemented the adult Chinook closure.

These trends generally mark the wind down of the KFHAT “season”. The assessment team will continue to carry out bi-weekly meetings until the bulk of reporting sectors are “Green”.

Fall Monitoring | Annual Spawning and Carcass Surveys

Spawning surveys in the Trinity River kicked off the week of Aug. 31. No redds or carcasses were observed in the first week. The first three redds of the season were observed Week 2 in Reach 1 (Lewiston Dam - Bucktail). Through four weeks of monitoring crews have observed 68 redds in Reaches 1-7, and two successfully spawned female Chinook Salmon carcasses.

It was an honor to take part in the Hoopa Valley Tribe and California Department of Fish and Wildlife ribbon cutting ceremony this past Tuesday. Our Executive Director, Mike Dixon joined CDFW Director Meghan Hertel, Hoopa Valley Tribal Chairman Joe Davis, Elizabeth Hadley Reclamation's Area Manager for the Northern California Area Office, along with other state and Tribal officials to officially dedicate and celebrate a new, jointly operated fish weir on the Lower Trinity River.

The consolidation of two weirs into one signals a new era of cooperation between partners vested in monitoring and improving the health of our Trinity River salmon. Prior to the construction of the new weir, CDFW and the Hoopa Valley Tribe each operated separate weirs on different parts of the river. The consolidated weir located on the Hoopa Valley Reservation will operate to temporarily contain fish for both scientific examination and selective tribal harvest.

Partnership and cooperation were top of mind for our Executive Director when he addressed the crowd, "partnerships form the basis for success within the Trinity River Restoration Program and today we honor CDFW and the Hoopa Valley Tribe's commitment to fish health and their dedication to the partnerships that work toward a healthier Trinity River."

Dixon honored two managers from each agency, Mike Orcutt, Fisheries Director for the Hoopa Valley Tribe Fisheries Department and Brett Kormos Program Manager for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Each persisted, communicated, compromised and were pivotal in making this consolidation possible.
