Many moms and moms-to-be know that breastfeeding offers many benefits for mom and babies. Evidence shows that human milk also reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The longer you give your baby breast milk, the more protection it gives.

Babies need tummy time! Supervised tummy time is important because it helps to strengthen your baby’s neck, shoulders, and arm muscles so they can begin to move on their own!

Most babies can start with a short amount of tummy time soon after getting home from the hospital. Gradually increase tummy time so that your baby is doing 15-30 minutes of tummy time every day by the time they are 7 weeks old!

For more information on the benefits of tummy time, visit safetosleep.nichd.nih.gov/reduce-risk/tummy-time

Regular prenatal check-ups in pregnancy are important for many reasons, including helping moms maintain a healthy pregnancy and prepare for baby’s birth. Prenatal care also helps reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) by lowering the chance of preterm birth and low birth weight.

October is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month. SIDS is the leading cause of death in infants under one year of age nationwide. While the cause of SIDS is not fully understood, research shows that safe sleep practices can significantly reduce the risk!

Following the ABC’s of Safe Sleep can help keep baby safe:

• Alone: Place babies on their own sleep surface, free of soft objects and loose bedding
• Back: Always place babies on their backs to sleep, for naps and at night.
• Crib: Use a firm, flat sleep surface such as a safety-approved, crib, bassinet, or play yard.

💜

For more information about SIDS or how to access safe sleep resources, please call HHSA’s Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health (MCAH) program at: 1-800-766-6147.
