As autumn arrives in Webster Groves, consider leaving some of those leaves right where they fall.

Leave the Leaves is a simple way to support a healthier yard and local environment. Fallen leaves provide important habitat for butterflies, moths, and other beneficial insects, while also returning nutrients to the soil as they break down.

You donโ€™t have to leave every leaf to make a difference. Even setting aside a portion of your yard can provide valuable habitat throughout the fall and winter.

This fall, spend a little less time raking and give nature a place to overwinter. Leave the Leaves is supported by the Webster Groves Green Space Advisory Commission.

Spread the word with a yard sign available at the Benny Gordon Recreation Center for $10 and take the pledge at webstergrovesmo.gov.

City Councilmember Leanne Waugh serves as the liaision to the Green Space Advisory Commission and shares this message from Blackburn Park.

Did you know pumpkins can't go in yard waste bins?

Each fall, more than ๐Ÿ ๐›๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ฌ of pumpkins end up in landfills nationwide, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Compost them instead! Bring yours to the Pumpkin Smash on November 7th at Blackburn Park in Webster Groves.

The free event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Jackson Road parking lot.

Smash your pumpkin to pieces with a baseball bat and deposit the contents into a large dumpster, so they can be diverted from the landfill.

Pumpkins collected during the event will be composted, turning seasonal decorations into nutrient-rich material rather than waste.

Remember to remove all stickers, googly eyes, candles, wax, paint and glitter.

Funding is provided by a grant from the Saint Louis County Department of Public Health utilizing County landfill surcharge funds.

Participating municipalities include Webster Groves, Brentwood, Maplewood, Crestwood, and Sunset Hills.
